I think its to "mesh" with the new metro panel thin in Windows 8

Actually, that was the Windows logo. The Microsoft logo was just plain text.

Microsoft is really upping the ante, with the new Surface, a new metro style OS and now even a new Logo.

Yeah. It seems that their corporate identity is all moving in one direction. Their website and knowledge base sites have also had a little facelift to incorporate their new "style".
