Any MMO's worth getting into?

Same here, my wife plays Wow I have no interest in it. What I love about GW2 is that I dont feel like I am pissing money away not playing it.

Pretty much why I'm hesitant to take out subs on any MMO at the moment. If they started selling subscriptions per hour, I'd sub to quite a few games again. Like, say a 120 hour timecard that counts down only while you're logged into the game.

Debatable as ±sub's pricing is about the same I would pay for one night out. What can I go out and do right now that would be R5.36 per hour? (R150 / (2hrs * 14 days)).

If I feel it fulfills my entertaining needs then I'd say why not? I am paying for it myself in the end and not you :)

You are however correct if you do pay subs and don't play, then don't bother.

This would be awesome but Publisher wouldn't go for it since they would loose money I think.

Oh yeah to each his own, like I said I pay the £9 monthly sub for my Wife to play since she enjoys it but for me with my short attention span its not worth it, I like to play several different games at a time so I always felt like I was wasting money when subbing for WoW or EVE.

I have my doubts that would work in practice though. Firstly - what would a reasonable charge per hour be? Those guys who have no lives/jobs/school etc would almost certainly get shafted in a bad way. You could make both types of subs available, but somebody's going to end up paying more, and if gear elitism wasn't bad enough, you would probably end up with some form of subs-elitism too (I pay more than you etc).

Frankly speaking, I don't think I'll ever dish out subs for any MMO ever again - not because of GW2's presence, mind you. There's just way too much variety in the F2P arena right now: Aion, STO, DDO, LotRO, GW2 - SWTOR is implementing a F2P model, I frankly don't see TERA lasting much longer on their exclusive subs model either. I'm sure I've left a couple out.

While DDO and LotRO didn't really do anything to keep me playing, I'd probably be willing to play TERA and SWTOR for short periods at a time - similarly to what I do with STO. Although I haven't been back to STO since well before GW2's release (same with Aion) but at the very least they are there.

If you're not sure about whether an MMO would fit you best to take one of the totally F2P AAA titles for a spin before you put money down anywhere. You'll deal with some restrictions, certainly, but at the very least you'll be able to get a feel for the game and the genre.

It would probably end up with the per-hour gamers paying vastly inflated rates, but in the long term I think it might save money for someone like me. I don't really want to pay $15 a month if I'm only going to play 10 hours that month.

Eve is a game I'm dying to get back into, but $15 a month doesn't quite justify what I'm getting out of it. I was subbed for a while last year and after a while I realised I was basically paying to work, because Eve had basically become a job. I was a miner at heart, so I'd often take a book to read while my ship mined asteroids and just stop every 20 or so minutes to send it back to a station to unload. Either that or I'd act as a guard for mining players for sums of ISK in low-sec space. If I can reach the point where I make enough ISK to buy PLEX, I'd gladly play again as it's one of the best MMOs I've played yet, but it doesn't quite justify the monthly price-tag.

Same here, I stopped playing Eve for the same reason. It is an awesome game but my time is far too limited to take on another job and pay for it.

I think for the first time MMO player you really have 3 good options: World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

WoW is still the gold standard of MMOs, it's got a huge player base, the game is mature and it has accumulated a ton of content. So it's unlikely you will ever find yourself running out of things to do in the game. The big downside of WoW is that you still have to buy the game and all the expansions to get the most out of it and of course the monthly subs.

GW2 is the new kid on the block, it definitely mixes things up for the genre which is a breath of fresh air for people who have been playing MMOs for a long time. But it is still new and not entirely proven so we'll have to see how thing go over time. The big draw for many people is that there are no subscriptions and just a single one time purchase, which saves you a crap load of money.

SWTOR is in many ways similar to wow in gameplay and format but from what I've read it has a really engage levelling experience and some nicely polished system. Downside to this is that there doesn't seem to be much endgame content so once you hit level cap there isn't really much to do. So depending on how serious you get this may or may no be a problem. This has subscriptions at the moment but it is going free to play soon.
