Next phase of ADSL speed upgrades begin

No no no.... telkom IS doing their bit, by giving out 1mb lines for the same price as 384k was... To meet their mandate, they cannot now reintroduce a cheaper product which requires more of the same hardware and adsl ports etc...

How about stop complaining about the people who need to buy cheap and clog up the internet, and enjoy your faster 1MB connection that you can afford...

(To sum up my post, fuck the poor!)

But like we've said before, Telkom has a mandate to supply internet to South Africa. Why then are they getting rid of a product that would certainly help them meet this objective. Its already there but instead they are pushing away part of their solution.
I also believe that not everyone wants to have to go out and pay for internet at a library or something. We should all be allowed equal access to rights. Its been held in the Constitutional court that no right has preference over another, therefore why should we be satisfied with basic right being ranked out against each other. Why now must we say you can enjoy access to certain rights but others you can't. I certainly don't see why someone can't have access to the internet in their home and people are fine with that but that must have Water in their homes. Would you be satisfied walking out to pick n pay, a 3rd party, to buy water since the government won't provide the service? However its alright to have a 3rd party charge for internet?

Somehow I think you don't get my argument.

Internet at a public library is free. Public libraries are not allowed to make you pay for it the same way they are not allowed to make you pay for borrowing books.

Also, dude, your arguments are getting weaker and weaker. You need water to survive. Without it, you will die. So yes, it outranks internet access as a human right, and yes, it is necessary to have water at home while internet at home is not necessary.

See this guy?

He died because he didn't have a source of internet from his home.

Let me simplify this
1. Internet is a human right
2. Constitutional declared that all rights have equal status
3. Telkom has the job to provide communication infrastructure to the nation ( regardless if the slow up the line)
4. 384 line is a great way to meet affordability and connectivity
5. By disregarding the above, Telkom is effectively failing at its sole responsibility
6. More people appreciate a cheaper connection over a faster connection
7. By ranking access to human rights you are effectively saying screw the constitution and other peoples rights.

BTW I've been using water to show the hypocrisy of people who have these services and then saying what others should and should not be allowed.

Edit:
8. In this day and age of rising bills, food, rates and petrol how many people would find relief in one of their monthly expenses getting cheaper

No, it's not, not in South Africa.

2. Constitutional declared that all rights have equal status
The above point has pretty much nulled this statement

Yes.

4. 384 line is a great way to meet affordability and connectivity
- Unless they upgrade it for free to 1MB, which they did

5. By disregarding the above, Telkom is effectively failing at its sole responsibility
- No, they are in fact being awesome with this free upgrade

6. More people appreciate a cheaper connection over a faster connection
- Most students or people whose parents pay for their internet connection.

7. By ranking access to human rights you are effectively saying screw the constitution and other peoples rights.
- Point 1 again

- Water is a need for your body to survive. Internet is a commodity. It's a stupid example.... :wtf:

- It is happening, I mean, since I signed up for 1MB uncapped, it has become much cheaper! Compare today's cost against the 1MB uncapped cost of 3 years back?

Answers above in red. I am not backing telkom, believe me, but your statements are all incorrect pretty much...

All your "answers" make no sense, I see your point in 1 but the rest either comment on 1 or make no sense. How is upgrading speed cheaper than keeping your existing line but with a cheaper line. Also if a students parents are paying then why should he care what the price is. Its more of a telkom fanboy comments than a real argument ( "they are being awesome") and your still looking at this from the angle of someone who can afford the line.

Looks like this will forever be a disagreement, or at least until after the speed upgrades and Telkom returns to normal image.

Yeah, we're not getting anywhere because you're stuck on saying internet access directly from home is just as important as having regular access to running water.

I'll say it once again, if you can't afford the measly fee of R175 a month for internet, then you've likely got bigger concerns than a lack of internet.

LLOOLLL, a Telkom fanboy? I don't think this is even humanly possible? My arguments are my comments... You sound like a pissed off teenager not able to get what you want... Also I never mention price, it does not bother me... I am paying the same price as before or even cheaper for the same thing... Prices are dropping... speeds are increasing.... what is YOUR point????

Internet is most definitely not a human right.

LOL!!!!

Dude, your argument is invalid.... you want people to get ADSL and say it's more possible with 384k... yes, because on 384k we can give ADSL access to all 298476234732 shacks in Soweto, seeing that it's a human right!

Water is more important, and some UN countries cannot even provide that to their citizens and they also signed this shit... it's an idea, not a MUST have...

It's like everyone else says. You're paying like R10 extra for better speeds. Were you complaining when 384k was entry level for a slower cheaper connection? No...you were complaining about 384k being slow.

I've never once said I was unsatisfied with my 384 line, it plenty fast enough for my needs

Amazing Telkom is failing at their only job requirement, but after one act they've converted all of you. How's that ass taste Fanboys?

Can someone give me one good argument as to how a 1mg line upgrade is helping to connect SA to the internet. One reason why upgrading existing connections is better for their mandate as opposed to a more affordable service? How does this really get more south africans on the web? One valid argument

Ike009, either stop spewing personal insults and start coming up with proper arguments, or get out.

Telkom is now offering a proper broadband service at an affordable price. People not content to pay shitloads of money for a near-unusable internet connection can now get a usable connection at a decent price. 384 accounts were suitable only for browsing, and even that was debatable. You could barely stream or download on them, unless you were content waiting for ages to get anything down.

It's not about bringing shitty, cheap 'broadband' to the masses, it's about making real broadband more affordable. I know of 3 people who are now getting ADSL or moving back to ADSL after their 3G contracts expire, all because broadband that you're actually able to use for anything other than browsing is now much more affordable.

...I got home adsl now only because the 384k was upgraded to 1mb. how's that?
