You're speaking to a science major, I'm quite sure there's an evolutionary aspect to the social constructs we see in society today. Another interesting thing I read earlier today that we all have a "loser circuit" embedded in our brains that gets activated when certain social stimuli ala "loser lifestyle" is experienced. Inhibiting this "loser circuit" is quite a toughie... The purpose of this circuit is to basically protect us from getting beat on by would-be alpha-males. Primitive societies were very harsh and clear cut in this respect where the roles of individuals were explicitly Hunter or Gatherer. If you could not compete with "fitter" males your access to females/food would be severely limited and you wouldn't be able to pass on your "weak" genes. The best example of this is seen in ape and wolf community structures where the "alpha males" get exclusive mating rights. This is obviously "legacy software" or an evolutionary relic as modern society is not as cut throat as it was back then however this defense mechanism still perpetuates itself.
Obviously not social sciences.
Looking for sex? yep I guess so..In all fairness, it's not much worse than the expensive gift loving girl.

Looking for a lifelong partner that will love you and hold you at night? Errm..
Not gonna make you feel any better about yourself.
But here's the thing, the term Love is put into question here if it's based on expensive gifts. How real is it? If the foundation is expensive gifts?
