My NEW Gaming PC... Finally

I was recently fortunate enough to buy some "older" PCs from work at really good prices. I got myself:

Core i7 920 CPU
ASUS Rampage 2 Gene motherboard
8 Gigs DDR3 RAM (which I upgraded to 12 Gigs triple channel)
2 x 1TB hard drives
EN210 graphics card
Small case with 200W PSU

I also got an i5 for MalicE, and some additional C2D and C2Q systems, which is for sale on Carbonite.co.za.

As you can see, I need:
- New Case
- New PSU
- New GFX

I told the people on Carbonite that my items are for sale or trade, and I have since:
- Sold 2 x quad cores full PCs for R1500 each (need to keep the money for an upcoming birthday, so cannot spend on required parts :()
- Swapped a complete Core 2 Duo for a Coolermaster CM690 Advanced 2 Case with USB3 and windowed side panel

If anyone is interested in buying or trading for the items I need, please check out my Carbonite forum post and let me know. I am open to suggestions. Ideally I am looking for:
- A Corsair AX750W Modular PSU
- A Graphics card of +- R2000 (Joker suggester the 7850 / 7870 IIRC, not sure about the price range)

I built the PC into the new case last night, and figured that my 450W PSU's cables are too short. See the image below:

So I bought a Corsair AX750 yesterday, collecting it from Rectum today. Will replace the current 200W PSU I have in the case now (I had to sell the 450W with another PC as the 300W it had in, blew up as I was demoing it to the buyer :D)

My question is: Would the cables included with this PSU, be long enough to reach the motherboard? I'm talking about the 24pin and 4/8pin motherboard connectors especially, seeing that these have been too short on the last 2 PSUs I had in this CM690 II Advanced case.

Also, still need a new graphics card, thinking of getting a second hand 570 / 660Ti from Carbonite, let me know if any of you know of someone selling such an item currently.
 
I am also looking at buying a new monitor, still have a 17" LCD... So looking at the foillowing:

LGD2342PPN 3D LG D2342P 23" Wide HD LED, 1920 x 1080, 5ms, Contrast 5Million:1 15Pin/DVI/HDMI, Brightness: 250 cd/m²

OR

S23B370H Black 23" 1920 x 1080 2ms, MEGA DCR (1 000:1) D-SUB, HDMI, bright: 250cd/m²

The first LG is a Passive 3D LED screen, so it does not do 100Hz. It's cheaper than the Samsung without this feature, so I'm a bit skeptical about this. Would hope that someone (Hint: Joker) would know about this, and will be able to offer some advice.

OR to make it easier: I am looking for a 23/24" screen in the R2k range...

I collected my AX750 PSU today, it's so damn sexy! Gonna install it now!
 
OK, just installed my new PSU, looking good!

I just have one question... the PSU fan is not spinning... Could this be a self-regulating fan? I can feel the PSU is still ice cold, will the fan kick in when it gets hot, or did I get a dud?

Anyone know this PSU? (I'll read up some more now...)
 
OK yes, so according to the Corsair Forums, the PSU fan will kick in when it reaches a threshold, otherwise it stays off to save power and reduce load.

As you can see from the Pic above, I seriously need a new Graphics card now... The EN210 just aint working :)
 
A liquid cpu cooler(something like Antec KUHLER 620 or similar) would compliment your build quite well, imho...
 
Yeah its normal. Ive got the same PSU. I don't think the thing has spinned more than a couple min total in its life.

Kinda surprised that you went for such a heavy CPU & mobo, but only 2k GPU given that its a gaming PC.

But yeah, go with whatever Joker says. He help me too & the advice was solid.

Also...get a SSD. Makes a huge diff. ;)
 
You see, I have played about 10 hours of games in the last 4 years... hence not focusing on a massive GPU. On carbonite, I can get a GTX570 for in the region of R2200, so that should count as a heavy GPU :)

Also, I bought the entire thing for R1k, including CPU, mb, ram, 2 x 1TB hdds, and case and cpu, so it was not by choice :)

Next, I need to get a new GPU. That little EN210 is missing in the case... :) So GTX570 / 580 / 7870 / 7950 may be on the cards. Which of these would you prefer and why? I am kinda leaning towards the 7950, due to the 384bit and that it's newer tech....


And then after that on my list, I would like to get:
- Corsair H100/i Closed water loop
- SSD
- Better RAM (currently using Kinston DDR3 1333 value ram, could do with some dominator triple channel kits)
- By the time I get to this step, I would probably have to change the core 3 again.....

Haha yeah, I went a bit bigger than expected, but getting the main parts for R1k has left some cash to spend on the rest of the items :)

Because I've had a Pentium 4 for the last 8 yearws, which was good for gaming for the first 4... :)

I really want to get back into it!
 
Can i recommend a good value for money/performance card?

GTX660 (non Ti- new). I have had 3 allready and it's awesoem for the price (if you play BF3 that is). Ati 6970 (2nd hand) or even a 580GTX (sold 1 for R2300.00 not long ago.) Many choices.....
 
Okay, so since most of this stuff goes over my head, the only advice I can give you is that, whatever you do, do not buy a Roccat Kone mouse. I've had two in a row, and the first one couldn't move diagonally on the screen, and the middle button was broken (as in, literally squashed to one side), brand new, out of the box. I got another one from Prophecy, thinking I'd just gotten unlucky the first time, but the new one's middle button doesn't work properly (if you're trying to scroll up, it scrolls up a little, then down again, rinse, repeat), and the voice function doesn't work (it has a a voice function that tell you what settings you're using, for example, it'll say "DPI up" when you er... up the DPI.
 
Personally, I'm going back to Razer. It's the only mice that I've had working for more than 3 years. Currently got a Microsoft Sidewinder that I've been using since the start of the year, and it's a piece of shit. Right mouse button has been sticky since about March, and the middle mouse button just broke.

1k? wow. Either thats missing a digit or someone felt very generous.

Gaming PC...well the thread title said gaming PC so that is what I assumed.;)
