getting back into it

So I haven't played FPS's online since Counter Strike was cool. I wanna find something to entertain me.

Ideally looking for something with local servers that have players on them.

I played planetside 2 this weekend for a bit, its ok, but I want something with some more action too.

I was looking at Battlefield 3 (premium edition is well priced, comes with 5 expansions and already unlocks 18 weapons or so).

Then there's Black OPS 2, brand new, so I wont be years behind other people. It cost's twice as much, doesn't come with expansions, but does have a (online only?) zombie mode ...

Suggestions ?
 
Have you played Blacklight: Retribution?

It doesn't have local servers, but I find it is still quite playable and it's free!

Will have a look, but I find the free 2 play stuff really has intense initial grind to start hitting even ground.
 
I'm still enjoying Team Fortress 2. F2P and there are a lot of local servers.

Tribes: Ascend is worth a look as well. Also F2P, no local servers, but there are no lag problems or none that I've noticed and we run a shared 1mb line

We offered the Tribes people local servers, they declined saying they were doing something about it. So yeh. Naturally nothing happened.
 
Blops 2 is expensive yes but its worth the money :D
Bf3 is also worth it but it get's boring after a while.
I'll even go as far as recommend COD4 :P
TF2 is a great F2P game and there are allot of local servers and players :)
 
As someone who is currently massively addicted to Blops2

I say ....

Go for BF3. Good varied gameplay, from slowish and tactical to run n gun rambo style depending on what mode you play not to mention all the vehicle action as well as flying around raining death from above. The graphics are still the best for any fps in my opinion, yes even ArmA2 and there are a crap ton of people online.

No worries, Its super easy to find a game to play through your web browser.

It also wont decimate your wallet at this stage.

My reason for choosing BF3 over blops is, as someone who has been out of FPS's for a while you will get shot the sh!t up in Black Ops. You seriously need the reflexes of a squirell on redbull in some matches.

Yeah that's true... I've played allot of cod 4 especially the promod and it really helps with the improvement of your reflexes I might be mistaken but isn't there a browserbased game that helps with aiming etc. Think its fps trainer or something
 
Ok, after some research, paying $30 for the premium thing for BF3 is a no brainer, so now I await my 16.5GB download (My SSD is looking small). Then I think I'll pull TF2 and Blacklight: Retribution over night and I should be set for a long time :) Maybe at a later stage I can get BLOPS 2 when there is no early adopter tax and my reflexes are back up.

Blacklight is good, I just get a lot of lag which becomes very annoying

Ya just googled it, will look at it more in depth tonight!

isn't it Pay 2 Win?? , as in it's free but you can pay for better stuff and guns?

if not, i'm jamming it :)

Most Free 2 play adds pay to win, some Pay 2 play games also have pay 2 win, but then it's generally less pay 2 win available.
