AMD vs Intel: Which is better for budget gaming?

Hi MyGaming Forum goers

I'm looking to upgrade my PC. My needs/wants are basic:

4 core
3.0+GHz CPU
No need for SLI or XFire
4 memory slots

I find myself drifting between AMD and Intel. I'm not planning on upgrading for the 2 years and when I do there will probably be a new range of chip sets out so future proofing isn't necessary. Also I don't plan on doing any OCing

I just want to know what the pros and cons are of Intel and AMD? Most columns/reviews are biased beyond understanding so I thought public opinion would be a better bet.

Please help. Please.

Oh and I have a budget of R3k for MoBo, RAM, CPU and PSU

If you're on a tight budget, AMD would definitely suffice for "budget gaming". Costs than Intel. And it'll last you a good few years.
If you're looking to invest in a real performance rig, then you're definitely going to want to consider Intel. Personally, I don't know just how much greater than Intel AMD is, but, to my knowledge "It costs more cause you get more".

Better performance. More features. (I may be speaking under correction)

For a budget, definitely go AMD FX series.

CPU speed does not mean much these days 2.2Ghz Quad will beat a 3Ghz Dual if the program/game is multi-threaded and uses multiple CPU cores properly.

FX-4100
MSI 760GM (not going to get 4 RAM slots on a tight budget)
8GB Transcend DDR3
Thermal-take 600Watt

Would cost just around R 3000

I've had my eye on that sort of setup for while now with the exception of the MoBo, I managed to find an Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 which has 4 DIMM slots and is reasonably priced.

Thanks for the advice about the cores as well, it's always nice to learn something new.

Now, let me go and spend my bonus on my rig :P
