PSU - Can't Decide

Hello all.

I posted a thread about my new build this december in the PC gaming section - which was completely stupid of me because I should have posted it here. Unfortunately the Admins have turned off thread deletion so I couldn't rectify my stupidity.

Moving on, I am pretty much decided on the components I will be ordering - Except for the PSU.

My original choice was a Corsair GS 600 Because it is on sale at Rebeltech. However, I'm seriously tempted to go for a TX 650 (maybe an M series because modular is nice), even though it's 600 or so Rand more. I will be OCing my CPU in the Future, so I need a pretty solid PSU. I haver read nothing but great things about the Corsair line, and as far as I know their PSU's are actually manufactured by Seasonic (I speak under correction though).

So what are your opinions? is the extra cash for the TX650 worth it?

Rig Specs:

Cooler Master HAF X Chassis
Intel i5 Ivy Bridge 3570K Processor
ASUS P8Z77 -V Motherboard (If I can find one)
Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz RAM (2X4GB Sticks, will purchase two more in the new year for 16GB or RAM)
Seagate Barracuda 500 GB 7200RPM SATA6 Hard Drive
Corsair H100 Closed Loop Cooling System - Radiator mounted on the top of the case in a push/pull format
Windows 8 64Bit DSP
EVGA 650 Ti 2GB DDR5

Why are you spending R1800 on a chassis?
You could put that cash towards a decent GPU, a GTX650ti is not a decent gpu.
Also drop the H100 and replace it with a Antec Kuhler 920

Here is what I would suggest:

i5 3570k
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Corsair Vengeance DDRIII 1600 2x4GB
Seagate Barracuda 500 GB 7200RPM
Antec Kuhler 920
Corsair Carbide 300R
Windows 8 64Bit DSP
Sapphire HD7870 GHz Edition, 2GB 256bit
XFX PRO 650Watt Core Edition 80+ PSU (Also built by Seasonic)

Agree 100% here with TheJoker...

You are spending top dollar on this PC, but will end up with an inferior graphics card... unless your idea is to get the "bones" in place and then upgrade the GFX occasionally, then the build is in order.

BUT if you are looking for a PC to build now and not touch for the next few years, then I would drop the expensive "outers" and spend it on better GFX :)

You're Bang on about the "Bones" Thing... Should have mentioned that. The way I see it, a GPU is something that can be easily upgraded and swapped. if I can get a good foundation with the CPU, RAM and other stuff, I can then wait a few months on the 650 Ti, save up, and eventually get something a lot better. by that time, nVidia will probably already be on their 7XX series of GPU's.

Like I said, I wanna get a good foundation of other harder-to-replace parts before spending on a good GPU. I'm happy to play with the 650 Ti for 3 or 4 months (about the time whereafter I will be replacing it). after that, I could always sell it or keep it as a spare.

Why specifically the HAF X? Well, a couple a months back I hosted a LAN and one of my friends brought his over. I was blown away by how big it was and how low his temps where even under a full night of load. It suits me perfectly because I love tinkering around with the hardware (even if it is just to clean out the Fans and internals) and the massive size it has inside is a bonus for me. It's just brilliantly designed, and I like that. It also fits that radiator for the H100 on the top perfectly - but I'm busy checking out the Kuhler 920 and seeing if the same is possible.

To be honest you are kinda silly with the way you are looking at it.

ITs like having a Ferarir chasis with a 1.6l Golf Engine in it.

Drop the case to soemthing like the 1100 from Antec and a 7870 as a minimum with the extra R800 odd.

OR get a very small chasis like the K380 like R400 odd and get a big GPU. Then later on upgrade to the HAF X.

You are trying to copy your friend as HE HAS IT NOW YOU SHOULD TOO> Get out of that mentality for all aspects of life as it will cost you a lot and you can get better for less.

Well, At least I'll have the option to swop out that 1.6L Golf engine for a Ferrari engine in time. A case upgrade is substantially more difficult than a GPU upgrade, but I get where you are coming from. It's only a few months, I'd be happy to wait that long if it means I could get a 7870 (maybe even a 7950?) or a GTX 670. I'm not choosing this case purely because my friend has it - In all the reviews and case discussions I have read, it constantly comes up as a recommendation. I considered a ton of cases before this, but the HAF constantly comes up as a consideration again and again.

I also agree with Joker, but with that setup he will be able to juice that gpu like crazy. About the case , you need a quality case for good cooling (I have a raidmax iceberg, had it for 3 years, the airflow is really supreme and - get very nice temps), but 1.8k is too much, you can get a quality case for 1-1.2k , and the rest of the money can go towards the gpu. Also what resolution are you planning on using? The 550 Ti supported resolutions of 1660 by 1080, so theoretically the 650 Ti should run 1920 by 1200 ok'ish (correct me please, haven't tried it yet).

I'm planning on running everything at 1680 by 1050 Resolution, but that will definitely change in the future to 1920 X 1080. nVidia claims that it should run 1080 Fine - I think all Kepler's support 1080 and Res's in that range.

I have been having doubts about the HAF Myself, again because it's quite expensive, but I'm exceptionally pedantic about heat. I'm coming from a background of gaming off of my MacBook Pro (which only has a GT 330M) which hits 81 Degrees C in Battlefield 3, so I have always had a thing about heat. I guess the fact that I also got to see it and play around with it in person is a plus. I had the opportunity to check out other cases at rAge - but I didn't because I was spending too much time staring at the AMD Girls.

I have considered a few others - most notably those from Antec (DF-85, 1200, 1100, 900, Even the LANBoy) and even other HAF's. I might have a change of heart in the coming days and get a different case.

suggested changes:
1) 2500k>3570k from what ive heard, it oc's better
2)get win7. windows fails every 2nd release pretty much
3)as mentioned above.get a cheaper case
using the above changes you should open up alot of your budget for a decent psu and gpu

2500K was out of stock, and I did end up getting windows 7 Home Premium in the end (GabeN's comments about windows 8 put me off).
Still went with the Case though, as some of you will probably be disappointed to hear.

Thanks to all of you who gave me ideas for the build and recommended other parts to me. Everything has been ordered already and now it's just a game of waiting for them to arrive.

Oh yeah - and true to the threads original intention - I went with a Corsair TX650 PSU.
