A riot at Groenpunt prison this week underlined the urgent need for more prisons, the IFP said on Thursday.

Officials had failed to contain the situation because of the high number of inmates at the prison, in the Free State, said Inkatha Freedom Party correctional services spokesman Velaphi Ndlovu.

"Overcrowding of prisons renders unmanageable incidents like this....

"The IFP therefore urges the Minister of Correctional...read more here: Build more prisons: IFP

It's great to have a death penalty... but think about this...

Say your mom/dad goes to a work function, drinks 2 glasses of wine, and has an accident. The other driver dies. You mom/dad now gets the DEATH PENALTY for this...

This may be a harsh example, but yes, there is a reason that we do not have a death sentence in SA.

Look I am all up for violent crimes and murder, but it's very easy for a normal person to accidentally be classified as one of these :)

I don't think manslaughter is a death penalty offence. Maybe, maybe, culpable homicide - but as far as I know it applies to first and second degree murder. I think.

no, an accident is an accident. if you go and all out murder someone, be it while robbing the liquor store, or mugging or just plain plan the whole thing from scene of the crime to where/how you hide the body, you deserve the death penalty.

I have heard way too many stories of people that were sentenced to death and it only later came out they were innocent all along. I can only imagine if something like that ever happened to me how I would feel. I would have only supported the death penalty, if proving someone guilty was 100% foolproof, but we all know there's no such thing as foolproof.

Yeah, I know, used extreme example... don't even know why, 'cos I'm all up for killing the mofos!!!

I see no reason why our taxes should pay for their board and lodging, food and education, while the poor law abiding people aren't afforded the same. It's ridiculous.

especially not in this country :)

but I think that mostly only happens in Texas :p

In America it actually costs more in Tax dollars to carry out a death sentence than I full life sentence.
You need bigger lawyers, longer trials, additional trials and through this process that can last up to 5 years you need a an extra secure/ max security individual cell. The prisoner can't eat meals with others, has to have a private recess and is practically on constant suicide watch.
A normal sentence is cheaper, faster plus you can trough him in a cell with a room mate, recess with everyone else and normal dinning procedures.
Most US states have the death penalty but of those practising, most haven't asked for it in years. Its only really Texas that actively uses the system.

I really wish we could use the death penalty buts its just not feasible these days.

Side fact on the electric chair, side effects may include melting eyeballs, release of bodily solids/fluids (adult diaper recommended), head catching fire, penis exploding and of course death.

Yeah but spending a few years in our prisons might as well be a death penalty :-/

I know at least one of our top judges will quit the day the death penalty is brought back.

tbh I don't have enough faith in our police & legal system to want the death penalty. Hell we've got cops who can barely tie their shoes.

Township justice is free?

Seriously though, good points all round, but I have always felt if you kill somebody, you lose your right to live. The other thing is, if the death penalty was introduced, you'd probably have inmates on death row for years on end, costing even more money in the long run.
I guess I just seriously disagree with the fact that murderers and rapists seem to have more rights than what law abiding citizens do.

If I was allowed to "shoot to kill" I would so own a firearm and shoot every mofo that tried to mug, hijack or try break into my house. :) Oh and I would shoot at Taxi drivers :p
