Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 Secrets Allegedly Leaked to Nvidia by Former AMD Executive

Over the last year, AMD executives have been abandoning ship for rival Nvidia, and according to a new lawsuit, they took confidential information about the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 with them. Engadget reports that AMD has filed suit against four ex-employees, claiming that the executives absconded with thousands of confidential documents, including sensitive information about technologies at use in next-gen consoles. As our well-placed sources told us last year, custom silicon based on AMD's A8-series APU and HD 7670 GPU will be used in the PlayStation 4, while the Xbox 720 will combine an IBM PowerPC CPU and a custom version of AMD's 6670 GPU.

What a joke it would be if those specs turn out to be true. Those GPU's are not "Next Gen" material by any stretch of the imagination.

To be fair, since the specs are better than the PS3 and xbox, be it not better than general pc's, makes it next Gen. Next Gen doesn't mean best out there, just the next generation of console.

When the PS3 and Xbox came out they had GPU's that were near as powerful as the current top end PC hardware of the time. These specs put them near the low mid end of PC's one year ago (a 6670 was slow when it was new for pity's sake), not exactly high performance stuff and not enough of a step up to claim "Next Gen".

If these specs are right then we can't expect much more than current gen graphics at 1080p and after seeing Star Wars 1313 and Watchdogs I do wonder how these consoles are even supposed to render that.

essentially consoles have less overheads than pc's, remember the ps1 had a 33mhz processor and it still produced games like gran turismo 1 which rivalled graphics from then state of the art 166mhz mmx P1 pc's in 1998 or take colin mcrae rally 1

the rsx in the ps3 is a crippled down 7800 nvidia gpu and look at the brillian graphics the ps3 can produces. or take the original xbox which ran at 700mhz and yet it ran games like half life 2 and doom 3 which required pc's with literally double the processing speed to run the game at minimal.

Valid point dude and I completely agree, I'm just not sure a 6670 is 1080p @60fps material.

Those specs don't look right, the PS3 and 360 were on par with the top GFX card of the time, a 6670 is useless, my laptops is more powerful.

One has to look at the price to I mean a top of the range card now can cost you R4000 alone.

I will be happy if the graphics just looks better than this generation. Less screen pop ins and grainy textures.

Some more rumors to speculate over.

According to sources as reported by Eurogamer, both consoles will be powered by an eight-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz built using AMD’s Jaguar architecture. This type of CPU is typically used for low-power notebooks but will have double the number of cores found in portables as well as a few other customizations.

We are further told that Orbis, the codename for Sony’s PlayStation 4, will ship with Radeon HD graphics. Specifically, we can expect to see the Radeon 7970M clocked at 800MHz with 18 Graphics Core Next compute units. This is expected to produce 1.84 teraflops, according to data recently published by VG24/7.

If true I'm not so sure about a 1.6Ghz CPU :wtf:, but a Radeon HD 7970M sounds a lot better than a 6670 and would actually be "Next Gen".

rumoured 720 specs

durango_arq1.jpg

CPU:

- x64 Architecture

- 8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)

- each CPU thread has its own 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache

- each module of four CPU cores has a 2 MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4 MB of L2 cache

- each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources

- each hardware thread can issue two instructions per clock

GPU:

- custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor

- 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads

- each thread can perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle

- at peak performance, the GPU can effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second

High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present

Storage and Memory:

- 8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM DDR3 (68 GB/s)

- 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102 GB/s)

- from the GPU’s perspective the bandwidths of system memory and ESRAM are parallel providing combined peak bandwidth of 170 GB/sec.

- Hard drive is always present

- 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive

Networking:

- Gigabit Ethernet

- Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct

Hardware Accelerators:

- Move engines

- Image, video, and audio codecs

- Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware

- Cryptography engines for encryption and decryption, and hashing

personally clockspeeds mean nothing these days remember the 360 and ps3 has 3.2 ghz processors and yet the wii u with a cpu that has half the clock frequency are able to render the same games

Top of the range graphics cards have always been that price, the one thing you can always be certain of in PC terms, the top will always fetch that price. I remember buying a 7600GT and it cost around R2k back then.

im pretty sure the rumoured x720 6670 will be on die with the cpu (like current amd apu's), which means it wont run on a slow bus to communicate with the processor and thus will probably be a shiiiiitload faster than a vanilla pcix 6670 card

lol, I was just being pedantic, I totally agree with your sentiment. I was basically saying, a crappy upgrade would still make it generation 8 (I think?, too lazy to check), but it would make Generation 8 a rather disappointing generation of consoles.

Except AMD CPU's are generally slower than Intel parts of the same clock, this is why 1.6Ghz is a little concerning for an AMD CPU. Dev's are going to have to use those threads well on a CPU like that.

Yeah I just don't wan't the consoles to disappoint, especially if they are expected to last as long as the current cycle.
