Dota 2 Files, do I need to download them, or can I use a friend's?

Hi there, sorry if this has been asked before, I tried looking online, but I am not having any luck.

My friend has given me a key to play, but I don't have data, or rather, money for data right now.

He told me I cant copy his download file as it will mess up his online game.

Does anyone know anything about this? Or how I could use his file instead of downloading them.

Any help appreciated :wtf:

Apparently this is an online only game. I am worried the install file is somehow linked to his username, and installing it will try link it up to him somehow....

Just copy the game folder from his steamapps folder to yours. Once you launch steam it should detect the files and install.

Install files are just install files, they are not linked to anything. When you launch the game it checks if you have the key which gets registered to your account. The key is locked to your account, not the install files.

He wont let me unless I can be sure it wont mess his game up. haha

Tell him he is a horrible friend.

Copying never destroyed anything.

Lately the copying method has been somewhat unreliable. Worse case scenario is it wants to redownload it though so go for it.

LMAO! Okay :) haha thanks!

Don't just copy the files, that is likely not to work properly or that you don't get all the required files. Rather use to proper method for copying Steam games.

Get your friend to do a backup of his game. You do this by going to your Steam library and right clicking on the game you want to backup and select "Backup Game Files". It will then ask you which games you want to include in the backup and what size you want Steam to breakup the backup files into. I usually set it to DVD (4.7GB). Then you choose which folder you want to put the backups into. Steam will then go through the process of backing up your files. Once that is done just copy them over to your PC, open the folder and run the SteamBackup program which will install the game on to your system nice and easily.

There is no identifying information stored in the backups so you are free to pass them out to whoever you want.

^^ this

However doesnt work very well with non 3rd party steam games (e.g. Batman GOTY). It will request a Product code and yours wont work with the backup version that you get from another person.

I copy Steam files from my bro all the time and installation works just fine.
It shouldn't have ANY effect on his game. If you have a Steam account, and have the game, you should be able to copy it into your folder and play it just fine.

Now and then you may need to download an extra files before the complete installation, otherwise... :)

You mean if you have the GOTY version and you are getting your friends original version, then yeah I suspect that would not work.

Arkham City or Asylum?

Let me just take this opportunity to go off topic and say "screw Games for Windows Live".

I think Monk's backup files suggestion is the best way forward for Dota 2.

This^^ I've given the game to a couple friends using this method.

I used this method when I installed Saints Row: The Third. I still had to download an additional 80+ MBs before I could start playing.

Flip! Really glad the backup method was mentioned. Between my buddies and myself we've had to reinstall Dota2 on a number of machines using the straight forward copying method and that was a total stuff up! Ended up battling for quite a bit until eventually we came right :| Probably because our versions weren't matched and there was a flurry of patches at the time but still, this thread is a life saver.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a sticky on how to do this for Steam and Origin. Especially Origin...

Origin is copy paste stuff but you need to first start the game download to create the folder. Stop it, close origin and copy the game you want into the made origin folder. Start origin again and it will speed thru the d/l and then d/l a small bit and you can play. There was a thread somewhere.....
