Government must give tax rebates to citizens who pay for their own private security, trade union Solidarity said on Wednesday.

Due to government's failure to safeguard them against crime, South Africans now invested heavily in security, while at the same time paying tax for the service, Solidarity deputy general secretary Dirk Hermann told reporters in Pretoria.

I disagree with that. Those who want and can offer their own security can get it if they want but it doesn't mean you should be exempt from paying for the police. That is just silly and would make the problem worse.

You are right, but with the police being useless as they are, there are 2 sides to this.

Bullshit. The solution is to fix the fuckin security not to give a refund.

Also, private security haha. If 4 guys with AK47s roll into your garden who are you gonna phone? Your rent-a-cop or the police?

Also, with each taxpayer financing ~9 other citizens, if every taxpayer gets his money back that would leave ~45 million people without security. We might as well announce martial law then...

Its kinda unusual for Solidarity to float such utterly crap ideas. Usually their stuff is at least semi coherent.

Agreed, but a tax break for everything (or something similar to Eskom's subsidy for solar geyser heating etc) would be nice even if it starts with security expenditure as this can cost a small fortune! :o

But security thing aside, tax rebates and medical deductions etc should be adjusted(increased) for lower income earner but this just my wishful thinking! But I'm going a bit off topic here apologies!

Medical aid deductions have increased, its now a rebate as opposed to a deduction. The end effect is a better saving for lower incomes compared to high income.
I hate the new system compared to the previous one.
