Alternative for iPod

Does anybody know if there's a cheaper alternative for the iPod. Maybe with the same storage capacity and specs, but that isn't so overpriced?

Not possible, I-pods just work so much better than anything else, you can get something cheaper but it will be a downgrade.
I've already planned the wedding to my I-pod touch

Maybe a smartphone might be on a similar level but it won't be cheaper.

Pity Microsoft stopped the Zune.

Was far cheaper, works like a charm and the 'extras' (car radio kit etc) was cheap!

My 30 gig Gen2 Zune is still going strong!

Thanks a lot guys! I'll have a look at those other two. I don't really care much for an appstore or wifi at the moment. I'm just looking for something with enough storage space to carry all my music with me and listen to it. so basically about the same capacity, without the fancy bells and whistles.

Then that Transcend might be what your looking for mate, i think its supports upto 32gb memory card if memory serves me right and its about R700 bucks.

Fail comment is fail.

Check out http://anythingbutipod.com/ to assess the options that are out there. Personally I'm using the older 8gb Sansa Fuze with Rockbox installed and it's been great. It also has a microSD slot so you can beef up storage.

To be honest though, smart phones are kind of killing this market.

The iPod itself is a nice piece of hardware, but iTunes is probably the worst software I've ever (been forced to) used. Just the fact that you have to use it ensures that I will never use another apple product in my life.

Then your not invited to our wedding.

But nothing there is in the same class as the ipod touch, IMO :)

:)

Indeed it all comes down to what you value in the product. You can't fault the design and quality of the hardware but Apple products tend to be overpriced when taking "bang for your buck" performance into consideration. Also the audio quality of ipods has been greatly overstated over the years. And as Wlad mentioned itunes is a big put-off for me.

If you happy to pay the premium for Apple and don't mind the closed software ecosystem (no customisation, forced to use itunes, etc.) then ipods are not a bad choice.

Hoewever for me, I want to be able to customise my stuff and use whatever software I prefer, so Apple is a big no-no for me.
