But what if more Youtuber's start doing this? Are you going to allow them all?

That's a good question and I'm open to debate on the subject. The line will have to be drawn somewhere. An assessment of video quality and content will have to be made. Maybe we can address that hypothetical if and when it becomes a reality?

My question to you is; do you think it currently harms or detriments the forum?

The 'Report Post' button works just fine.

Fair enough ... I forget about that sometimes

Until I need to report someone anyways :p

I haven't even noticed, tbh, but if no-one's complaining about it I figure give him the benefit of the doubt.

Yea it looks like it :P

My 2c - I actually like the threads that are started by members and not the news reposts from James (No offence James - I just find the threads started by members more interesting simply since 9 out of 10 times I have already read the story you posted on the main page).

I do feel we need to somehow draw in new people and get them to stay for more than the random 20 post spamming to gain entry into the comps. So few of those people actually stay and contribute from what I have seen.

Well, most forums I've used try to at least keep related topics in the same threads, but since that doesn't appear to be the case here anyway, I guess it doesn't matter.

Hence why they have been directed to a sub-forum now.

I agree that member posted content is best, but when it's not happening, I have to try and drive activity. An automated system has clear benefits because I'm pressed for time. The topics themselves are good for the forum content as well, and people do engage with them.

If you have ideas on how to draw in new members I'd love to hear them. Competitions work by getting new guys to create and account and post 20 times to try and get the ball rolling. It's an easy way to do it from my side. Please bear in mind that I'm pretty much the only admin on MyGaming that is pro-active (apart from our maintenance account).

The best way to get new members to stick is for the existing community to provide a pleasant welcome, which is why we try to keep the discussions friendly and do not like to reign down infractions and punishments for mistakes made by newcomers. Community self-moderation is a good way to go. Unfortunately, sometimes things get a bit out of control and we have to step in to resolve an issue.

James, have you guys considered doing video features/series, maybe even podcasts (aside from the video review idea)? Maybe have a weekly topic amongst yourselves MyG overlords, maybe give a few initial thoughts while reviewing a game (not an actual vid review), stream or record a co-op session, etc (you guys may have better ideas)

EDIT: Even take footage while at conferences :?

Since everyone is throwing about their coins in here:

I am visiting MyGaming more and more because I prefer the way it works. There is a lot more transparency with how it operates eg. moderation, competitions, etc. I am comparing it to mybroadband because they are related and I also post there.

Apart from the duplicate news that doesn't relate to gaming which I don't like, and my rebellious nature against monopolies, it's more relaxed and the people are friendlier.

It's great to see explanations for things done and a lot more tolerance. Let's not lose that.

I have a suggestion that might come in handy, and I'm not looking for a debate. :o

Since you guys have the Let's Talk Geek show, I figured as a similar concept or after the show the guys who do write reviews should also add little snippets for video reviews (something similar to how Zero Punctuation works). In plain engrish Write a portion of the article/ or the whole thing but add a vid to go with it for those of us that enjoy listening in the background and don't get much of a chance to read.

In the vid you can add commentary to the gameplay or something etc... etc...

I'll just go back to my little corner in TK. :)

You see? Syco catches my drift :D. I've been following Polygon a lot, and they have "Today I played", "The Co-Operatives", and "The Besties podcast"... Something in a similar format on MyG certainly wouldn't hurt:D.

Unfortunately sites like Polygon have massive offices, staff contingents, and multimedia teams. Between Jeremy and I, we simply don't have time for this.

So it's more a case of not enough resources? Oh well... Maybe we should start a kickstarter(However that would work:D).

Or maybe the community can help out :?

Did you read my reply? I outlined some criteria for that to work.

I thought I replied on that ... Anyway I don't expect payment from you guys (The MyGaming Team). I'm one of your oldest members and I enjoy it here, if I can add more value to the site as I have always tried to do then I'll do just that. :)

My grammar tends to be a bit shoddy at times but I do try. :o

I honestly wouldn't mind getting on this venture (if possible"whistling:)

I think the risk with this is who to let write stuff because I'm sure many people would love to.

You may think a criteria is being here a long time, but surely it should be more who is most qualified as with other things.

I don't think MyGaming wants to have articles written by Joe Soap and his crew of forum members because then there isn't proper consistency, grammatical errors, bad writing skills, and the site suffers because of this.

I don't think it's as simple as just letting some people write for free. James and the other writers etc. are qualified in their various fields, and I'm sure there is stuff you learn doing those qualifications that enables you to become a better writer.

If you just simply let the community write stuff things are going to turn sour because people might think they would be better at writing stuff than others and then you're gonna have a bad time.

To go off on a tangent a bit, the media is suffering enough in this country with shoddy journalism and I think there need to be certain standards kept up.

I wouldn't know where to start.

To become a better writer, you have to write.

I seriously fully agree with you when it comes to qualifications etc... I've always offered the site my service where possible and when needed. I enjoy writing when I can and to me it's more of a "hobby" than a job. The comps for example, I do because I want to and the guys working their asses off in the background know this. :)
