Board games!

As a family, we have found the recent joy of board games again. I have a couple of favourites now, but I'd like to get opinions on other's favourites.

Current favs:
Catan Junior (for playing with my kids)
BattleShip (classic)
Ticket to Ride
Ticket to Ride Europe (lot more strategy)
Munchkin (for the lazy D&D in me)

My all-time favourite is Settlers of Catan! Then I also like playing Monopoly and 30 Seconds. My wife likes playing Rummikub and Clue (or cluedo?) so I'll sometimes play that with her. I also enjoy Risk, but I've played that years ago.

These are my more modern favourites, my 10 year old plays these with us and regularly beats us:

Dominion
Ad Astra
Lord of Waterdeep

30 seconds can be a lot of fun, yes. If you like that, also try Balderdash.

We ahve a newish Trivial Pursuit, one that you place bets on whether the person will have his answer right or wrong... lots of fun!!!!

We also have a game called "Cranium", pretty much a combination of drawing, spelling, performing and clay sculpting, to progress ion the board. Aslo MASSIVE fun!

I suggest you check out both of these, kids love Cranium!

We've got one called Activity - also one of those combo games involving drawing, talking and charades. Always good fun.

Settlers of Catan is an awesome game, but I'm enjoying Carcassonne just a little bit more at the moment. There is nothing wrong with having both because they are completely different in every regard, except that both are awesome fun!

When I was a kid, I loved the Mad Magazine game. Dunno if you can still get it, though.
Also played a lot of Risk. If you think a lego brick can make you swear, step on a Risk piece.

Of all the games I can most strongly recommend Dominion. It is the first of a new concept and won numerous gaming awards for the concept. It is the first of the deck building card games. Basically, you build a deck of cards as you play, you start with 10 in your hand. It is not a trading card game like Magic, you get all of them in one go. Dominion is not fantasy based so it makes for good family fun. The concept sounds simple and therein lies the true attraction, it is easy to play but with tons of strategy. The games are quick and because you have a large amount of cards to choose from, each game can be very different.

Give it a go, I can honestly say that I have never been so surprised by the fun game play as I was with this, and we play a lot of board/card games.

Boardgames.co.za stocks it for R520. My wife almost killed me when I bought it but after the first night playing it, she quickly said it was the best buy of the year.

The two player Rivals for Catan boardgame is also really nice for all the people who've noticed that the normal game doesn't work so well when you are only two.

I was thinking of getting either Dixit or Carcassonne next. The latter can teach my child about planning and cause-and-effect.

I only recently got Carcassonne and it's actually a magnificent concept all-round. It sets up and packs away in seconds. It's easy to learn, but hard to master! You can play perfectly well with only 2 players, but also with up to 5.

I have Munchkin Apocalypse, it's brilliant!

also heard that Battlestar Galactica is quite good
