SimCity servers not needed to run game simulation: RPS report

I dunno. Yesterday I forgot a download running in the background while playing the game and with the increased latency it took noticeably longer for certain things to happen in-game, such as when I plop down a park it took a lot longer for all the smiley faces to show up.

Given that people report playing for 30+ minutes after losing connection to the DRM server I think we can safely conclude that the sources are right and EA is full of shit.

Tum tum tum :D If this truly is the case then the game will in all likelihood be cracked very soon.
Definitely. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened yet given how much publicity is available for whoever kills the DRM first.

Eh, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. You can't receive resources from other people when the game is offline, as far as I know. Those calculations are more than likely done server-side and the game can't assign you resources as when the game regains connection the person you received resources from might have demolished his city or certain utility items, etc.

The game is already built for all this online only nonsense... If they go offline now that would mean they have to take out A LOT of features and implement new one's... Haltering the production of any new games they're working on. NOT likely to happen... And please JUST GET OVER THE ONLINE ONLY DRM. It is what it is. If that's the direction EA is taking it then DON'T BUY THEIR GAMES or STOP COMPLAINING IF YOU DO. Complaining isn't going to stop them...BOYCOTTING is. :)

That's why I'm doing both :P

No idea why people allways complain about Online games.. wake up and smell the coffee it's the new future for all games, and it's way better than offline games, if you wanna play offline games pull out some oldies and go throw yourself a lan cable between your friends, because you are still stuck in the past.

I strongly disagree, there is no reason why you can't have the best of both worlds. When did PC gaming become online PC gaming? Why should PC games be restricted to places where you have a reliable Internet connection? That means that you won't ever be able to play PC games again on vacation, or when looking after somebody else's home, or in a train, or on plane, or heaven forbid when your Internet is down. There are lots of neighbourhoods in SA that can't get ADSL. Gaming on 3G is terribly unreliable. Does this mean that these people should just give up and forget about ever gaming again?

How does it detract from your experience by allowing people to play offline should they so choose/prefer?

Then with what you just told me it's clearly not the game that is the problem, it's the lack of internet as most places gives internet even on plains now-a-days, and why would you play with your PC on a train or a plain, lol?

EDIT: And you do know most people who complains about online games is those that are the ones who wanna download the cracked ones first, and if they see it's a online game they know they will never benefit from the full experience.

No reason? There is a reason, just because you disagree with it doesn't mean there isn't a reason. I can give a couple and I don't even care that its always online.
1. 30 minute wait time on launch is good reason not to have always online. I don't believe I should have to wait to be able to play a game.
2. My internet isn't working.... yay I cant play my game!

Edit: And no, I don't download cracked games, ever.

Its a plane, those things that fly, over a long boring period of time. Perfect time to play a game on a laptop.

1. Then why do you buy the game on release date? if you know you won't be able to play it when the servers are too busy.
2. Get a better ISP.

It depends on the game. Certain games will be less affected by it because latency doesn't really affect them much - Simcity for example. However if the servers are down for maintenance, so is your game. If your Internet is down, so is your game. Why are the SA Simcity players playing on so many different EU servers? Oh that's right, because we aren't enough for them to warrant a SA server. So that adds an extra 150-200ms to your latency. 150-200ms is ENORMOUS for FPS games, it was also very noticeable in D3. Why should I have to play a game online (when I choose to play alone) with a 150-200ms latency when I could be playing the exact same game offline with zero latency?

Sure, an offline game is more crackable. But by no means does that mean that everybody that asks for offline, only does so because they want to crack the game. I have absolutely no issue with Steam that asks me to login and authenticate online and verifies all of my details but then allows me to play in offline mode should I so decide. Why was no fuss made when HOTS's servers failed several times on launch night? Because people only had to authenticate online, and they could then play the campaign offline. Why is that so bad?

So by that logic its ok to have always online drm for SP games? How the fuck does that make any sense.

Yep, and the most active gaming mode is casual gaming. So if you don't like playing casual games online then you are out of luck :D

Where did I say I bought it on release? I'm giving my reasons on why I think its stupid for this game to be always online considering the history of the game. My ISP is fine.

Then why do you make things up if you did not even have the problems? makes no sense.

Then i can say regarding offline games..

1.) why should i go spent money on a game where everyone else will have a cracked FREE version.
2.) I won't be able to play with any online friends as it's a offline game and had no social abilities to be connected.

oh and most importantly.. my PC Crash i lost my saved games, and then the game just lies to dust, where now my games are fully saved on servers abroad.

There is only so far you can go with a better ISP, before it won't help anymore. The speed of light is already a serious limitation when it comes to communication. It can circumvent the world 8 times in 1 second. That's 125ms round-trip latency between the opposite sides of the world. ASSSUMING: that you have a 1-hop, straight as an arrow, fibre connection with absolutely no other delays, no contention, no shaping or conversions whatsoever. Which is obviously not possible.
