The Phantom Poet
This is way overdue (we're basically a third into 2013 already
), but it won't hurt to appreciate the gaming gems of last year
.
In any case, MyGaming had a series of polls last year, all in the interest of determining which games were among the most favored within the MyGaming community. Some of the results were pretty much a landslide win for certain games, whilst others were so close that it was pretty much the equivalent of a photo finish. These results provide some interesting insight into what the MyGaming hive are into.
Without further ado here are the consolidated results.
Best Puzzle Game of the Year
Winner: Q.U.B.E.
Runner-up: Puddle
It was a pretty straight forward win for Q.U.B.E. getting 36.67% of the votes, while Puddle came in second with 16.67% of the votes. Check out Nic Simmond's review of Q.U.B.E..
Best Driving Game of the Year
Winner: NFS: Most Wanted
Runner-up: Forza Horizon
One would call it a very odd coincidence that this category would be the one with its forerunners being so close in end, you'd basically call it a photo finish (racing terms
). The 2 big titles pretty much had no competition other than each other, with NFS: Most Wanted clinching the award with 39.33% of the votes, and Forza Horizon coming in a close second with 33.71% of the votes. Personally, I think Forza Horizon should have won, but that's just me. Check out Lee Joseph's reviews of both Most Wanted and Forza Horizon.
Best Platform Game of the Year
Winner: Trine 2
Runner-ups: Mark of the Ninja and Rayman Origins
This was another interesting result with Trine 2 (my personal favorite in the category) taking the title with 30.95%
of the votes, leaving Mark of the Ninja and Rayman Origins to share the second place spot with 20.24% of the votes respectively. Unfortunately, Trine 2 doesn't have a MyGaming review, but you can check out Quinton Bronkhorst's review of Rayman Origins and Rob Valentine's review of Mark of the Ninja
Best Sports Game of the Year
Winner: FIFA 13
Runner-up: SSX
FIFA 13 basically ran away with this victory, amassing 58.44% of the votes, while SSX settled for second place with 15.58% of the votes. Check out Gareth Thomas's reviews of both FIFA 13 and SSX
Best RPG Game of the Year
Winner: Guild Wars 2
Runner-ups: Diablo III and Mass Effect 3
Yes, folks, it's another one of those polarizing results with Guild Wars 2 (26.17%) taking the award from eager front runners Diablo III and Mass Effect 3 (my personal favorite) with 20.56% of the votes resepectively. An interesting point of discussion that came up in this particular category, was the question of whether or not the candidates in this category are what truly constitutes an RPG game. Check out Nic Simmonds's reviews of Guild Wars 2 and Diablo III, along with Dan Parmenter's innovative Mass Effect 3 review.
Best Strategy (Turn-based / Real-time) Game of the Year
Winner: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Runner-up: Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods & Kings
XCOM took no prisoners as it took 52.81% of the votes, while Civilization V: Gods & Kings had 12.36% of the votes for a second place finish.
Notable Mention: Worms Revolution
Best Third-person Shooter Game of the Year

Runner-ups: Spec Ops: The Line and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
This showdown left Max Payne 3 as the last shooter standing (54.35%), with Spec Ops: The Line and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier sharing the second place spot at 15.22% respectively. Check out Jeremy's Max Payne 3 review, James's Spec Ops: The Line review, and Dan's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier review.
Best FPS Game of the Year

Runner-up: Borderlands 2
Far Cry 3 took it home with 40.77%, followed by Borderlands 2 with 27.69% of the votes. Check out Dan's Far Cry 3 review and James's Borderlands 2 review.
Best Fighting Game of the Year
Winner: Street Fighter x Tekken
Runner-up: Tekken Tag Tournament 2
A close bout saw Street Fighter x Tekken take the title with 25.93%, followed by Tekken Tag Tournament 2 with 18.52%. Check out the Street Fighter x Tekken review.
Notable Mentions: Dead or Alive 5 and Soul Calibur V
Best Action Adventure Game of the Year
Winner: Dishonored
Runner-up: Assassin's Creed III
Dishonored seemed to have the better assassin with 31.07% vs Assassin's Creed III's 20.39%.

MyGaming Community Game of the Year
Winner: Far Cry 3
Runner-up: Borderlands 2
What's that you say? Deja vu? "Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?". Insanity prevailed as Far Cry 3 (20.50%) claimed the main prize under some competition from Borderland 2 (13.50%) and Guild Wars 2 (12.00%).
