Ram upgrade

I'm thinking off getting some more Ram, currently I have 2x2gb and I still have 2 open slots.

My questions
1 is it worth it to upgrade and if so to what level?
2 what combination to use?

Keep in mind I'm on a student budget here so I can't afford to go to high end. I'm mostly use my PC for Gaming and Research and video conversions

As per the previous thread Ram is getting more expensive. Need to know what type of ram DDR3? and what mobo you have?

I would opt for 2 more 2x2GB modules of the exact ram your running.
That'll be cost effective and you'll be running 8GB which is starting to become the norm now. Also future proofs you for a while.

Rectron have already increased their prices my about 15%, so you might just be too late for those cheap prices.

I upgraded my PC's RAM just before the price increase and put in an additional 12GB. Just make sure that if you buy bigger DIMMs which seam very likely in your case that you have to put them in the first RAM slots. Otherwise your PC won't boot and it will complain like you can't believe.

8GB isn't much these days. While the price of RAM is so low I would rather recommend getting 2x4GB DIMMs if your motherboard can support them. That would push you up to 12GB. Just put the same size DIMMs in the same channels.

Thanks I'm looking at DDRM3 at 1333.
What's the price difference between 2x 2gb and 2x 4gb. Also which brand

I was taking his "Student budget" into consideration.
Also mixing ram is not a good idea. I would stick to the exact same brand and model.

I wouldn't recommend switching brands, but switching sizes of the same manufacturer should be fine. He should in any case do a memory test over night or for several loops before accepting any RAM.

From Rectron:
2GB DDR3 1333 is R159 excl.
4GB DDR3 1333 is R289 excl.

Brand: Transcend with life-time warranty.

You can. But it's less risky if you get more RAM from the same manufacturer, and even less risky if you get more of the identical modules.

Ok looks like I'm waiting then, I would rather take a less risky route than jump in now to save some cash. BTW isn't rectron a distributor to resellers and not customers.

What are you waiting for specifically? Yes they are a distributor, but most people have an account there or a contact.

I don't have more than R500 to spend and getting 2x 4gb is a little out. :(
Thanks very much for the advice though.

Oh alright, in that case there's nothing wrong with getting 2x2GB. It's just less future proof than 2x4GB. The nice thing about the 4GBs is that next time you can upgrade your current 2GBs to 4GBs if you need more RAM. Where as if you buy 2GBs you will have to upgrade all 4 (2 of which you've already upgraded)

I see your point, I will save up a bit more and try get at least 2/3 x 4gb.
Thanks for the advice and know I know what to look for.
