Replacement machine?

Hey all,

I have a question as to do with insurance and replacement machines.

Last year my laptop got stolen. A replacement quote came in at R9000. I also submitted a quote for a kick ass gaming machine for R7500. Insurance do not want to replace the desktop machine, but rather the laptop.

Is it possible (or ethical/moral) for a company to replace the laptop, but exchange it for a desktop right away?

It's a sort of sneaky maneuver, but I already have replaced my laptop, so I don't need a laptop.

Can't you ask for a cash payment so you can purchase the laptop yourself? I know they prefer to replace the asset themselves but I’m sure you can argue that you know a lot about tech and get yourself a decent replacement yourself. If not I'm sure you can always pick up the laptop and post it to gumtree and Olx as brand new like everyone else seems to do and ask for R8500 with warranty included.

Insurance usually replaces what was lost. Not what you want, otherwise it's borders on fraud. Some companies even use a middleman to purchase products on their behalf to stop clients buying other products with the insurance money.

True, but if insurance replaces the laptop with another laptop and then you negotiate with the provider to exchange for the PC, nothing wrong with that.

Ok problem sorted.

Insurance will be replacing the laptop, at the cost given by the quote. PC International will just keep it as store credit, and let me get what I want.

Nothing law-breaking there as far as I'm concerned.
