Playstation 4 is the "perfect gaming PC"

A predominantly console games developer thinks a new console is the best thing in the world. Big surprise.

I'd also like to know what leads him to think most gamers use 32bit operating systems, because last time I checked the average gamer has between 4-8gb of RAM nowadays.

I'd love to know where these guys get their info from, because they are so, so far off the mark ... not the kind of thing I'd want to hear from game devs.

I'm not saying this to bash on consoles, but they seem to be operating on ideas from slightly before Windows Vista's release.

Indeed. I've never been interested in the console vs PC debate, but these guys really do seem to be stuck in 2008.

He said most PCs not most gamers, two very different things. I use 32bit as well, not that it really matters. I don't really care about the specs, just give me awesome games that I can play on it.

“The other exciting thing is that Windows for most people is tied to about 2GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows.”

Last I checked the PS4 is using unified GPU/RAM and a semi-modified APU so they will juggle between GPU RAM and system RAM a lot.

***EDIT
Also would like to know how much of the engine is being limited due to the hardware of the PS4. It's so easy to render a time demo, just saying.

Found my answer:

That may be true, but their target market isn't your average salaryman who is using his PC for Word Docs and Excel Spreadsheets. Granted there are probably plenty of gamers who still run 32-bit system, but I'll wager it isn't anywhere near the majority.

If it was an applications developer saying this, I'd go meh, whatever, but a game developer should really have a much better grasp of what's happening in the industry.

Hehe. You okes are misunderstanding him. Epic knows exactly whats cooking - they always have & always will. ;)

He is not talking about *average* he is talking about the lowest common denominator. He is excited about the fact that he can write code that assumes there will be at the very least 8GB of RAM. It has a massive effect on the design of the game engines & hence Epic is excited. Plus its GDDR5 RAM which is pretty neat too...

Both the GPU and CPU utilize the same 8gb of GDRR5. They might still end up shuffling data between the designated GPU portion of it & the CPU portion, but how that split (if any) is implemented is too early to tell.

PS4 will def fly. Just the raw specs are quite powerful & thats without even accounting for the fact that it'll have the benefit of upscaling too.
