Easily done, actually, if you have the right binned processor. The TWKR 42 could do 4GHz on air at 1.45v. AMD's overclocking efforts with binned FX-8350s for records have gone over 8GHz with LN2, so 5GHz on air or even 6GHz on water is entirely plausible.

Binned CPU for overclockers, not for the average Joe. I doubt AMD could sell a 5GHz chip with the current node process anyway, it's just not possible with Vishera.

So? I know its binned.

You still get diminishing returns in the heat/performance tradeoff for higher clocks.

I still don't see what you're getting at though. This chip is aimed at overclockers who don't want to spend more money then they need to manually binning all the CPUs they can find until they get the best one. I doubt they're worried about the heat/performance tradeoff if they want to break clock speed records with the thing.

Yes I know it makes sense for overclockers. Step back a bit though & you'll see that this is AMD is promoting higher clocks when its so painfully obvious that that is a dead end. It reeks of desperation and cash flow problems.

Worse this isn't a tech move, but a market segmentation one - the overall quality/performance of the chips didn't move an inch. A guy armed with Excel & a suit came up with this plan, not an engineer.

Pursuing technical dead ends that are profitable in the short term makes sense, but if its your headline grabbing top chip then the appropriate action is to sell your shares.

Yesh, the higher the frequency the more current flows = more resistance = more heat. I mean you can just as well overclock the normal 8350 to that and increase the chip voltage.

Funny how AMD CPUs run at much higher frequencies than Intel's but have barely 2/3 of the performance. If not less.

Also before you or anybody else jumps on me about sources, here is a very good read for those wishing to know more.
