Electronic Arts South Africa is closing down: report

What does EA South Africa do exactly? Do they just do the import of games?

Help desk service as far as I know, it easier than searching the web for an actual answer and still struggling. Last time I phoned in they were great so this kinda sucks, so we're back to emails that takes a week to reply. :(

EA SA managed marketing, sales, distribution, support and manufacture of EA Games in South Africa.

Say you bought Battlefield 3 and it does not work, or the CD you have is already in use you googled you binged you did everything you could think of. Most software exchange policies require that you phone (The supplier: EA, Megarom SK) in this case EA, and ask them to help you, if they can't give you a new CD key or get your game working they will give you a reference number which you give to the shop you bought it at. They phone EA and check that the reference number has been given out and what it's for so they can return the software back to EA.

If this is being discontinued who will deal with faulty software and returns? - Last time I tried to call their 0860 number it stayed engaged for hours before I gave up.

THis is not good, not having any local representation is terrible for growing SA's gaming footprint. Really hope this doesn't affect local console servers for BF4. If there's not enough drive to keep an office going here, then what are the chances of any other perks.

Well it would make sense since to smaller retailers with exception of large chains, Apex Interactive already handle their distribution especially with regards to smaller independent stores:s Could mean Prices can drop in terms of :D to standard R420 ex VAT for these stores, And Apex would have to import them themselves and be like a Megarom / Ster Kinekor. If you in the industry you will notice that EA games Cost price to the retailer is about always most of the time R10 more than lets say from Megarom or Ster-Kinekor

Worst case scenario though Chains will suffer from any of the Exclusives and they will have the same as everyone else or they will go direct to EA UK. And a bigger worst case Apex could lose EA to Megarom or Ster-Kinekor who have bigger pockets to be able to import at a large scale like EA does already.

Didn't even know they had anything in South Africa. Doesn't really bother me, other than a few people will be losing jobs, which is kind of sad.

Hopefully this doesn't mean their prices go up, since I believe they manufactured some of the games locally.

Prices for games in general have already gone up. BF4 pre-order for the standard edition is R450. But it's not just their games, all the pre-order prices seem to have gone up. Look at BL2 and Bioshock Infinite's PC prices, as well as the upcoming CoH2, which is R450 on pre-order.

Guess the days of R350 PC games are over then.

Some people might not know this but EA Support South Africa is 2 guys working from a house in Brakpan.

I know this how? I logged a support call when one of their games were stuffed and I drove to the house to get a replacement copy.

Don't remind me, it's rather depressing :p. I keep wanting to buy BioShock Infinite, but that price:eek:! I do think there are still a few games (and by extension some publishers) that don't expect us to sell an arm. I got Tomb Raider for R350 launch day, Splinter Cell: Blacklist's pre-order is about R350/R329 (Takealot vs. Kalahari)... But in general, game pricing has hiked up.

I suspected that when I had issues with my mass effect trilogy, kept getting the same guy when I phoned in during each step. Felt great having personal help when compared to ubisoft.
