Sony Shares Surge After Xbox One Reveal While Microsoft's Fall

Sony's share price has surged more than 8% since Microsoft's Xbox One reveal as investors reacted negatively to Microsoft's next console while welcoming further streamlining efforts in the PlayStation 4 maker.

At the time of press Sony's stock had jumped 8.8% on the NYSE to $22.82. The company saw an 11% jump in share price following the PlayStation 4's announcement event in February.

It's unclear why the jump occured though Microsoft's focus on entertainment and connectivity options over games - most of which will be announced at E3 - may have provoked the surge. It has also been reported that layoffs have hit Sony Japan though it's currently unclear if Sony Computer Entertainment has been affected. ...

Bwahahaha, there was nothing WOW in their announcement. And the second hand game thing really kills it for me.

Okay I'll put my stake in the ground over this one and say that I think MS will have it this gen. And they've shown plenty more than Sony has; why Sony would suddenly see a jump in shareprice after that is baffling to me.

What is so amazing about the xbox one that you are already willing to declare it the winner, when the opponent hasn't even announced his team yet?

Exactly what "plenty more" have MS shown? All I saw was 2 exclusive games and a bunch of TV crap that I don't care about. Sony on the other hand showed quite a few games, although they didn't show the actual console. Seems MS is focusing on the wrong thing, people generally buy game consoles to play games, not for integration with TV. I still might get an xbox one for Forza though, but if the rumours about a second-hand fee is true, MS won't be seeing a cent of my money.

Yeah, half that TV stuff they showed probably won't even work down here. But the only thing I really want clarity on is the pre-owned story.

The share price shows that MS dropped the ball here. They are entering a market with strong competition from one that was really just them and Sony. The smart TV isn't that big globally, why would their smart TV be different?

It's a gamers toy, show what they want and leave the rest for YouTube exclusives over they coming weeks.

And a direct answer on the internet connection requirement (if any, or when)

if they showed all the games in development, then what would be left for showing at E3 ? This conference was just to show that there is an actual console with final hardware that has stunning graphics and is ready for release at the end of the year, they said they had 15 exclusives in development and they will probably show most of it at E3, why show a rushed game at a console launch conference when you (have a month longer to develop and) can show a much more polished demo at the biggest gaming expo in the world.

They don't have to show anything (CG is fine), but they do have to show that as a games console, gaming takes priority, which does not seem to be the case this time around. Like I said, it seems like MS arw focusing on the wrong thing IMO.

That was well. Initially I wasn't so fussed about it, because I'm connected 99% of the time at home, but if I'm downloading an update on Steam/Origin or a full game, I'll often pop onto the Xbox while I wait.
Oh well, wait and see I guess.

Well they showed working hardware for one thing, and hands-on with the actual controller, and final software, and the highlight for me - the new Kinect in-box looks pretty incredible. Then there's the 500gb hdd out of the box.

And whether you don't care about the tv features, I actually do care. If that worked as shown it would be a big feature for me - gesture and voice controlled HTPC. Currently I use my PC via MCE to control the TV. This would mean I could dedicate the PC to being a PC and let the XBOX run the tv 100%. Specs-wise it will probably be roughly equal to PS4. I am impressed.

Fair enough, but I still think they should have showed more gaming related stuff and less TV related stuff. Sony seems to be focused and games and MS on TV IMO.

I agree with this. As someone who doesn't even watch TV, this really bothered me.

I can't actually tell what Sony is focused on to be honest. The PS4 seems like vapour to me. The software interface looks kludgy. The controller has this touchscreen gimmick on it that I can't really imagine will help the gaming that much. XBOX controller has flippin rumble triggers, and Kinect has much higher sensitivity. Those are very gaming-focused features. And as for rumours - just wait till the facts come out.

What they want is to control the living room space completely. That's why TV is so important to them. And I'm on board, I'd love it if they could make it work.

That's the best you've got? Rumble triggers and kinect sensitivity?. You haven't even used a PS4 controller so how can you call it a gimmick that won't help gaming that much? Maybe it does suck, but maybe, just maybe, it's awesome. I think you're missing the point, by gaming related stuff I mean games (like how Sony showed Infamous, Killzone, Knack, Deep Down, Drive Club, Diablo III etc) not "gimmicks" like kinect or the dual-shock 4. Anyway, I'm done here, I've given my two cents and that's that.

Why do you think this is some great argument? I just happen to think the XBOX reveal was more substantial and you think the Sony one was. It's not a big deal. The touchpad might be awesome but it was never tested, whereas the XBOX controller and Kinect were.
So far the games announced for XBOX are: Thief One; Forza 5 and 15 exclusive EA games like CoD Ghost; Quantum Break; Battlefield 4, Bungie's Destiny; 6 Ubisoft games. That doesn't seem like a measly number to me.

There are a couple of games rolling around with next-gen tags, they could have been shown last night.
(Watch dogs, AC4, COD etc)

I don't think it's a great argument or any argument for that matter, just a discussion of differing opinions. Most of the games you mentioned are multiplatform but that doesn't matter. All I'm saying is that as a gamer I expected to see more games at the reveal of a next-generation gaming console. At least Sony had guys on stage playing games. Like Ike said, they could have showed AC4 or Watchdogs running on the console, or even CoD or Forza.

Sorry if it comes across like I'm trying to argue with you, I'm really not.

Yeah look I think E3 will be the time when all those guys will show off playable games and hardware. That's clearly what Sony is waiting for as well. They don't want to blow their wad too much before E3 because then there's no surprises.

I just feel sorry for Nintendo in this race. They still own handhelds but I don't see how they can keep up on the console side. They just don't do hardware as well as the other guys. It might not be long before Wii U does a Dreamcast :(
