Report: Xbox One will be region-locked

The Xbox One will be region-locked, meaning all software must match the region of the console itself, Microsoft confirmed to Digital Trends. This means a US Xbox One won't be able to play games imported from Europe or Japan, for example.

"Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One."

The Xbox 360 isn't completely region-locked – Microsoft currently allows studios to choose whether their games will work across regions. The PlayStation 3 is region-free, and all games except for Persona 4 Arena work on every console, regardless of spatial location. It's unclear if the PlayStation 4 will be similarly region-free.

They just keep digging that grave deeper and deeper. It's like they don't even care about the implications.

The Xbox One is looking more and more less attractive,I sure hope Sony has something more gamer and wallet(saving) friendly cause the future of gaming is starting to look bleak.

This isn't exactly shocking guys...lol

I think some people are making a huge deal out of this when in fact it isn't.

Who cares that its region locked? lol how is that gonna change your gaming experience?

Histrionics much? It sucks but it's hardly going to impact their sales to a large extent.

I highly doubt that post is anything related to Histrionic behavior. Although your response seems to want to enable it, but I digress.

It's region locked, so we will be getting a EU/UK model? I can only assume. Atleast we can import games from amazon.co.uk then if local suppliers are sold out.

Its just another nail that shows how disconnected microsoft is from its customers. While it isn't a big factor on gameplay it still effects the console.

You also have to ask in an age where global trading is as big as it is now why is microsoft restricting the market?
Granted its not everyday that I'm going to import a game from the USA but its nice to have the option. I remember my dad buying a game for my PS2 when he went overseas, its not cool expecting to have fun and then see an error message.

And that attitude is exactly why the gaming industry thinks they can get away with anything.

What attitude are you referring too?

Again how does this affect you?
How many of the guys bitching about this actually import or have imported console games?
I have never struggled buying a console game locally, in fact I can't think of one console game that has sold out before I could get a copy of it?

Artificial restrictions is one of the reasons Piracy is flourishing, and it is one case where I have no sympathy for the developers.

Its the same issue with guys bitching about the performance of the Xbox One and how the PS4 is so much faster, yet there is no actual head to head game play footage and benchmarks to prove this.

Moaning and bitching for the sake of moaning and bitching.

Both XBOX and XBOX360 are already region locked by default. I'm just not seeing the justification for the furor that this news has excited.

Not a dealbreaker for me. I can't think of a single time I couldn't get a game I wanted inside of my region.
And it's not like there aren't any other options. If you feel so wronged by the XBOne, just get a PS4 or a Wii U then.

Yip exactly.

Like I said, bitching and moaning for the sake of bitching and moaning.

The "It doesn't affect me directly, so what do I care" attitude.
