Neverwinter release date announced

The clips looked pretty awesome, but the phrase "free-to-play action MMORPG" makes me a bit sceptical. I've yet to encounter a free-to-play or MMORPG game that I like.

Totally agree with you. I'm busy playing guildwars 2 and enjoying it. But i had to pay something up front. Its free to play from taht point with some upgrades you pay real money for, but nothing that's game breaking. When i hear free to play, I generally feel because they not getting anything upfront, they tend to break some aspect of gameplay by making to many features something you have to pay real money for.

Neverwinter is already available, so you don't need to wait for the actual release. It's in Open Beta, and characters won't be wiped.

As far as F2P goes, i'd say you can play the entire game without paying a cent. There is of course ALOT of temptations and incentive to buy something, depending on what you want to do. If you're just a PvE type of player (doing quests, dungeons etc) then i'd say there's little reason to spend $$$, it's only convenience items (more inventory slots, mounts, companions) for the most part. If you are into PvP/Competitive gameplay then yes, the whole AH/Enchanting thing is going to force you to buy stuff.

The Neverwinter cash shop are very in your face in the game though, there's vendors in the game that take currency that you get primarily by paying $$$ , but overall , it's a nice game considering how much you can do without paying anything.

I'm also playing Marvel Heroes , which again, is entirely Free2Play, but the contrast is significant. The amount of content in Neverwinter vs. Marvel Heroes is insane. So it gives me new perspective when judging these games.

Of course there's also the Foundry in Neverwinter, which is kinda like a "map/adventure builder" . So even if you don't enjoy playing, nothing stops you from making your own zones with adventures and mobs in it and publishing it to the server for others to play. This also means, there are a ton of user created content in the game, all free.

Also, just a tip, if you roll a class, roll a Rogue or Wizard if you want to experience the "action combat" properly. The 2 Fighter classes are severely unbalanced and frustrating, especially late game. Cleric is good too, but you probably want to pick it for a specific reason (Healing others). Hopefully they fix the 2 Fighter classes with release, but at this stage, there's a significant level of frustration with them, which probably resulted in alot of players disliking the game as a whole.

I'll see about downloading the beta. I tried out two massive multiplayer games last weekend which did not impress and their names are already faded from my memory (I do get bored easily)... I probably mentioned something in the "What are you playing now" thread.

And I always play Rogue :)
