Xbox One and the Death of Ownership

Well, Microsoft went and did it. It took the step publishers have fantasized over for years, and destroyed the concept of videogame ownership.

The Xbox One will sell you games, but it keeps what it sells, while controlling and overseeing your actions. You're bagged, tagged, and possessed. You're owned and you're observed. Meanwhile, the false target of its actions will laugh it up with Microsoft, and the end user gets what it always gets shafted

Like how Jim paints a nice picture for the future of Xbone users, he is also using that fist to great effect in his videos.

Thoughts on paying R700 to rent a game from MS?

I fall in the extreme minority when it comes to this specific point.....

My thoughts on paying R700 to rent a game from MS......? I don't care......

I have never sold/traded any of my games and the only game I ever bought secondhand was Uncharted. I don't care that I would have to connect to the internet once every 24 hours to play the game I bought or that I may have to connect once every hour to play a game that I've borrowed from my friend.

I also won't have a problem when publishers incorporate 3rd party programs for games coming on PS4 that will basically do exactly the same as what Microsoft is doing automatically. Think Ubisofts uPlay or EAs Origin...... built into every game the publishers deem necessary. Cause that is what's gonna happen..... Sony themselves have said this, don't let anyone else fool you into believing other wise.

Sir, congratulations on having posted the best comment ever. I couldn't agree with you more.

And, like it was on PC, it will come crashing down. UPlay ended up having to scrap its hardcore DRM and Origin still remains irrelevant because most people don't bother with it.

Your argument essentially boils down to, "So what? Nothing I can do about it." That's precisely the mentality that allows things like this to happen to the gaming industry in the first place :)

I'm surprised to see how nonchalant people are about MS shitting all over consumer rights.

I hope you guys know that the online-only requirements are not just for verification purposes, but also because they intend to make some/all games online-only. Titanfall will be handling all its physics and AI calculations server-side.

I'm not surprised at all. The console manufacturers build up a fan base that are so biased toward their chosen system that they will end up defending it no matter what they end up throwing at them.

Yep, apathy is the killer in this scenario. Also, hope you Saffers with lines that cannot handle server side physics happening or having your line down due to Telkom for a week, are ready to suffer willingly.

Actually I honestly don't care.... not because there's nothing I can do about it, but because it doesn't effect me. I don't sell the games I've bought and I don't buy 2nd hand games. Like I said, I fall in the extreme minority when it comes to this specific point.....

That's not to say that I don't understand why the people are so pissed off about it. I completely understand. And if I was used to buying and selling 2nd hand games or didn't have an always on internet connection I would be on their side...... but I don't, and I do, so I'm not.

It's still early days and we'll have to wait and see how it's going to go down. My thought is that it'll be like Steam. If ever there was an example of how to do it right it would be Steam.

Will it be any different then how I've been playing the Battlefield and Call of Duty series on my PC?

I heard this as well and we'll have to see how that goes. In any case I'll be getting it for the PC.

I own both consoles, my fanboyism evaporated long ago. :p

This is probably the only thing that makes me worry a bit. If my 8MB line can't handle it or if it happens to go down this will be an issue.

My big issue is that this is a repeat of Diablo 3 and Simcity. You aren't buying a console to use and play with as you wish but instead the right to have MS dictate your lifestyle. I don't see why I need to pay R8 000 and then have all these restrictions dictating my use, after that sort of an investment I at least want to feel like I actually own something and can dictate my use.

This is sounding like that R20 mil Ferrari that you buy and own but then Ferrari keep it locked up at their factory and you have to ask permission to drive it around their race track

For MP games, sure it's the same, but for SP games to be online as well is the kicker for me and where it differs.

That's very true. Microsoft and Sony (with certain games) are going to have a torrid launch in South Africa unless our retailers get their shit together.

Can you imagine how many parents are going to buy their kids these consoles without knowing about the online requirements? Or how many of those pissed off parents are going to be returning said consoles?

They should start thinking of making pamphlets......

My big issue is that this is a repeat of Diablo 3 and Simcity.

This is also a very big possibility. We can only hope that it won't get to that point.

I'm talking specifically about singleplayer games here, though. Not only will they need to be online, some features will be handled server-side, meaning you're going to experience latency in your games. AI and physics calculations? Does that now mean it's going to take the AI 200 - 400ms to react to you? If you run into those cans of paint it's going to take 200 - 400ms before they go flying?

Also, as far as I know CoD can very easily be played offline. You just can't access the MP component when offline, but the campaign is open to you.

Doesn't bode well from where I'm sitting.

I've made it blatantly clear how I feel about this, and I simply won't buy a xbone or any game on PC with such intrusive DRM.

I feel this is part of the reason we are not part of the launch territories for the Xbone.
Stuff like D3 got away with it because it one game that people can avoid.

The people who avoid it often go console for their offline gaming.
Yeah that whole market just does not apply now, even with connected people your 1mib uncapped might not even cut it...

This is how I see things pan out
