Gaming Laptop

It's fantastic news to see Clevo laptops now available in SA. I run one now. It has all the hardware you'd expect in its more expensive "gaming" oriented cousins but at a much lower price point I believe. I've been using mine for almost a year now and have had no issues besides a little heat build up but I live in a very hot and humid area so thats to be expected.

I'm using the Clevo W370et.

Thanks for the replies.
I do like the Clevo laptops and I've heard a lot of good things about them on international sites, but how do they compare against the MSI GX60? I'm especially thinking about the 660M VS 7970M, but then again the AMD CPU is a bottleneck for the 7970M in CPU intensive games. So that is my biggest problem what will be my best system (performance wise for games) going forward with newer games.
GX60 Hitman Specs:
AMD A10-5750M (2.50GHz/Turbo 3.5GHz, quad core, 35w)
8GB DDR3 1333MHz
750GB 7200RPM SATA HDD
AMD HD7970M GPU (2GB, 810MHz, 1200MHz)
8x DVD-RW Writer

if R15k is ur budget then buy an Asus N-series laptop, these are amazing notebooks and well worth the look at.

I'm doing some research now and will get back to you soon. I'll investigate price point and weigh up the pros and cons of both laptops but remember that my user experience is only with the Clevo.

Good luck with that, either way its awesome owning a gaming laptop

Well, I'm back and it seems like a pretty simple comparison. The Clevo is cheaper and looks cheaper too, though I can attest to the build quality. It may look cheap but it is sturdy. The MSI is solid and looks the part too. So this is just down to preference; especially the backlit keyboard. If this feature is a big deal for you then it will probably swing you towards the MSI product.

Their performance is pretty equivalent. Not much to say here. Their displays are also of pretty similar standing on paper, though Clevo displays are known for forming positive impressions in their users. They have rather good colour reproduction for TN LCDs...

One last thing to note though is that Clevo notebooks are very easy to take apart and clean by oneself. I have done it on a two occasions and it was pretty easy as far as laptops go in this department. Also, the Clevo has the possibility of installing up to three hdds (at least on the 17" version). I have done this myself too. I was looking in the same price bracket as you when I purchased about a year ago and decided to go for the Clevo plus an SSD for the a similar price as one of the flashier brand-names.

Well, that's all I have to say on the matter besides: Go read reviews on notebookcheck dot com. That website is excruciatingly detailed and is perfect if you haven't checked it out yet. Good luck with your purchase. I hope I cleared some points up. If not, sorry for wasting your time :)

Lol that site is to hectic for me, i dont need that sort of detail...

Sounds like u leaning more towards the MSI?

Actually, I think the MSI is ugly and certainly not worth the price premium. I bought the Clevo after all was said and done... But it's your decision I just wanted to put down some more infos to help ease you through it. It's hard to part with such a large sum of money without the information.

I guess Ill always be a asus fan, but i have had the chance to work on all their laptops and test them.

I think think he should go try the N-series, the quality of that notebook is awesome

Actually my brother has an N series Asus but not sure which model. I will ask him how much he paid for it (got it a month or two ago).

Thanks for the reply Strawberry, but I'm still torn between the two. Although I'm starting to lean towards the Clevo, it'll cost me the same as the MSI but it'll include Windows 8 and Office 2013...
Have you maybe seen performance comparison between the two online, I haven't had any luck with Google.

Personally, the speakers on a laptop are just not important. I didn't buy Audio-Technica headphones for nothing...

High-five to another audio-technica user! :D

As for gaming laptops. I say go with desktops. I got HP-pavilion dv6 with i5 and Radeon 6770m and I finished mass effect 3 on it. Got medium settings and 720p but with 1080 and high settings the frame rate dropped to about 22-26. The heat and the high fan noise just made it annoying to play on, nothing too annoying, it's playable though.

So I think heat + noise is a important factor as well.
