MWeb or Afrihost for Gaming

I cant decide between these two deals one from afrihost which is capped 50gig, 4mb line and one from mweb which is uncapped 2mb. My question is which is better for gaming? I have heard form many people that MWeb is the way to go for gaming but only gaming and their uncapped services give you warnings if you download too heavy, but how heavy is too heavy. I still want to be able to watch like 10 youtube vids a day and not have to worry about it. Thats why i looked at the afrihost package which is capped so it doesn't matter how much u download as long as it doesn't exceed your capp and will it maybe also be faster because of the 4mb line, but i have heard that afrihost isn't the best for gaming. So which do I choose?
I am in Cape Town Table View if that helps

Get a trial account and see which one works best for you. Easy.

mweb: http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/2/Home/ADSL/Trybeforeyoubuy.aspx
afrihost: https://clientzone.afrihost.com/free-gb
webafrica: http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl-trial/

On mweb I do from ±50gb up too 300gb p/m... It all depends on what I do with it. If you don't go out of your way to hide your traffic and download 24.7 they don't have an issue with it. I've been at mweb for 2.5 years now (I think).

+1 for mweb every single problem I have has was a Telkom or SEACOM problem. Use your account wisely and Mweb will love you in return.

I suggest try the afrihost 10mbps account with 100 gb cap, should be more than enough for your needs. They don't throttle/shape capped accounts, you get the data you paid for.

I'm with mweb now, good service but a bit too expensive and they throttle even premium users at times.

What's your budget btw?

My budget is R600 p/m including the telkom landline which i have included in the price for both deals and they are both the same amount. Afrihost's 4mb line is also the 10mb line.

Its between 4 and 10mb and my friend who is in the same area and has afrihost says his connection is constantly at about 6mb so im very happy with that but i am mostly concerned about afrihost's latency in games because i dont know how good or bad it is.

They'll both be fine for gaming. They've both got their IPCs in JHB and most of the servers are in JHB too, so it won't really matter. I'd suggest trying both though...sometimes you get these weird flukes where one ISP doesn't quite work for a specific area.

If you think the 50 gig is enough then take the higher speed. You can always change it later if needed.

Don't worry about the youtubes too much...unless you're watching long 720p vid it shouldn't make a dent.

I do plan to get a trial version for both but at the moment i am leaning more towards Afrihost but thx al lot for the info you make a good point about the servers being in JHB either way

Hi, this may come across as a bit of a pitch, but being a big gamer my self and trying most of the products out there, I also battled to choose, I recently started working at Mweb business, and therefore took one of the packages (2mb uncapped business product) no throttling uncapped service, gaming has been a huge improvement on my last Telkom solution, where the latency stopped me playing BF3 as I just kept getting killed while I was staring at a frozen screen.

I listed some of the benefits of Mwebs ADSL business packages, (they are pricier than the home solutions but worth it as the contention ratio and latency is much lower:

Features & benefits
Uncapped download and upload capacity for a fixed monthly cost.
24/7 Technical support.
Unshaped bandwidth.
Notification of down time.
A low contention ratio, limited number of users on the line at any one time.
All Business Uncapped ADSL packages are available (for a small fee) with a 3G Failover offering.
5 static IP addresses, enabling you to host servers and deploy VPN connections.
Ability to add more static IP addresses if needed.
Business class router with every 12 month contract.

there is also a business adsl lite which is cheaper but does shape the line slightly.

PM me if you would like to know more

I also have to give mweb the plus 1. I tried Afrihost a while back, but it was during the whole MTN move and sadly the latencies in the evenings were horrible. I heard that Afrihost is a lot better now, so might be worth trying them now too.

The trial accounts are a good idea and all, however I have experienced it where the trial account doesn't trully reflect the actual product. This is especially true for the uncapped trial accounts.

If you don't want to worry about shaping and throttling, then go with a large cap account. However if you are heavy downloader or internet user then the uncapped is definitely better value for money.

I'm quite happy with my 2MB uncapped line with Axxess.

They also offer bundels now which when you have both your line and data with them will cut the price by about 10%.

Out of these two i would choose a 20mbps capped line from afrihost...
I have heard that it is very good and that they are good internet providers.

I have been using Afrihost for the last 3 years and have had minimal issues with them. The recent major event that caused issues is when they switched from IS to MTN and it took about a month for it to stabilize. Their support is really good and the times i have used them I have had no issues.

I havent used Mwebs normal support but I have had to deal with their premier support, which over the last few months has been beyond shocking. So if their premier support is like that i dont know what the general public support is like.

Other then that i would recommend Afrihost

From what I have seen from the reviews Afrihost isnt doing too bad same with Mweb, but Openweb and Telkom is apparently better.

What is the slowest line speed you would suggest for gaming?

dude u can play on a 384kb/s and still get 200ms to international servers, but dont expect to be able to talk on teamspeak at the same time.

Recommended i reckon is 1mb/s

And you reckon with 1Mbps you can have voice as well without issue? Even the newer games?

So folks it looks like we may be swapping from Telkom 1mb capped to Afrihost 1mb uncapped at home. Been on the capped one because of the bundle that Telkom offers with their free calling packages however now that we are moving and needing to get a new line etc at the new house it seems fitting to go for an upgrade (at long last).
Afrihost 1mb uncapped = R197 pm
Telkom 1mb capped (5gig) = R219 pm

Is there any other choice that is cheaper?
