Isn't it a bit late to realise this now?
I'd known for a long time.
Mechanics just isn't in my blood.

But, at the time, I had very little options, and my time was on a short leash.
If I had chosen a field in which to study, that particular day in 2010, I would've had to wait another year or do night schooling.
In hindsight... Why didn't I?

Because when the only choice you have is one choice and you had to make one it seems easier at the time than looking back in hindsight.

To give you some reflection on your current situation, I was in exactly the same situation 11years ago when neither myself or my parents had the money to study what I really wanted(IT Field).
So I chose a trade, became an electrician. Qualified, moved overseas for few years to pay off the bond on my house.
Came back, started studying for Electrical Engineer for many years over night classes.

And now I am here with a Masters in the field on Elec.Engineering.
It's never too late to study, the sooner you do it the better it will be for you and make you happier.

Thanks for the tip and insight.

IT is definitely the field in which I'd rather study. It's a lot less dirty (if at all).
Don't have to stand all damn day. And it's what I'd much rather prefer doing above mechanics.

If I'm honest - it was really a spur-of-the-moment thing. I figured, many of my family members are mechanics, so I can be one too.
I have come to regret that state-of-mind.

I love cars. Knowing their specs. Their looks. Their sounds. But, to actually work on a car, not a passion!

And my Grandfather,Father was also all Electricians and then became Electrical Engineers. So it's a family thing.
Being an Electrician is just as bad believe me, instead of a problem being in a stationary vehicle you have to work in house, factories and offices and every thinks you are a piece of s**t because you work with your hands and don't sit in an office.
It's sad but it's very true thing that happens. Other parts of the world you get paid very well to do 'dirty' work because simply no one else wants to do it.

Look at it this way, we can always work for ourselves if s**t hits the fan. And people will always need a mechanic or electrician ;-)

Gradius that impressive bru.

I'm a draughtsman, also supposed to be studying Mechanical Engineering part time through UNISA. Sort of stuck in a rut. I've learnt I don't know how to study. I will carry on trying though.

Depends, some IT also involves crawling around, in tight dark dust spaces and pulling cable.

That's true. Very true.

Today, as I stood around assisting the mechanic - I took a look at my situation (looking at the engine, the mechanic, the workshop) and I just had this epiphany ... "This isn't for me".

I didn't feel comfortable - I felt out of place.
I'm liking my studies, because I'm learning a lot. But, furthermore - there's simply no interest.

Maybe you could implement what you've learnt in a different way instead of working on the shop floor?

We all we're there one stage or another. That feeling of wtf am I even doing here.
Put your head down and study hard, you find it interesting because it's something new and not the same mundane thing over and over.

Only thing I know is how to change a plug or to repair it :D

Yes. My dad is actually offering me a possible job up there in the Northern Cape - mostly to do with electronics, PCs; and selling of such things.

Definitely something that interests me.
