The 2013 tax season for submission of tax returns has officially opened, the SA Revenue Service (Sars) said on Monday.

By 6.30am on Monday, 260 Sars officials were already on the streets raising awareness about the start of the tax season, Sars spokesman Adrian Lackay said.

"By the start of business this morning, more than 11,238 income tax returns have already been submitted though the internet on eFiling," Lackay said.

Was trying to submit my return bright and early, but apparently, so was everyone else in South Africa. I'll try again in the wee hours tomorrow.

I like to submit in between the two extremes of extremely early and last minute.

Hmm, that must explain the 2km Q at the SARS building in the Cape Town CBD today. Lol.

Really not the greatest idea to go on the first day or week, unless you're desperate for a refund. E-filing is still the best option and way less stressful.

im gonna wait until i really need some cash to submit my return... i always get monies back :D

I will be good and go register as soon as we have a quiet day at the office. Maybe I get some monies back as well!

I still have to file my return. According to my calculations I might be able to buy a couple of games with the money mr. Tax owes me :D

Where do you work these calculations out??? I would love to know if it is worth while to do it or not.

when you complete your e-file return there is a calculator that gives you an estimate of what you would owe or what SARS owes you.

You can also work it out yourself using the pocket guide. You'll need to use your total annual income according to your IRP5 for the calculations. Unless you have a car allowance, I don't think people usually get back a lot. With a travel allowance though, you can claim all the tax back on that if you've travelled enough and kept a logbook.

See that is why I was wondering since I am way below their amount to submit, plus I only have medical aid to claim... But if its anything above R500 I will do it, simply since that will pay for at least one text book
