Have single-player FPS gone backwards?

Three ways to fix FPS Singleplayer games:

-Quicktime events was never a good idea. Gaming industry JUST STOP IT!! Its over used and not really a good way to try and tell a story. Its forced and takes control away from the player.

This is some serious sense... A piece of my soul died while I played MW3 and BF3's SP campaigns because of the amount of hand holding and Quick Time events done in those games, QTEs are not fun, never were and never will be.

I don't mind them so much, my biggest pieve is un-interruptable cutscenes just after a checkpoint.

Picture this:

You and your squad are doing recon in an abandoned building when a(n) [insert type of bad guy] suddenly appears, catching you unawares and dragging you into a melee brawl...

Press (read: Mash) F to stab
Press E to reverse grapple

You unfortunately miss a prompt, and you're brutally punished by an unavoidable death (because obviously, your character can't recover from a mistake in judgement), which is driven home by it's death scene.

You respawn at that point just before the QTE fight broke out... Rinse, repeat, etc.

Now, imagine being presented with these sequences 2 - 3 times per mission... That is not fun. I strongly feel that QTE's are unnecessary and frustrating (not the good kind of frustration), and unless some developer figures out how to make them fun (which begs the question of how), they should be done with.

Yeah that would also annoy me. Almost everything is okay in moderation. With QTE I was under the impression that you were referring to bullet time etc in games like Max Payne.

No ways bro, bullet time is an awesome combat mechanic :D

In general I would agree with you, but I kind of enjoyed them in the latest Tomb Raider.

Also agree that QTE is fine in adventure games like Tomb Raider - miss some QTE and you are in for a gorey treat :P
The problem with QTE is the lack of possible outcome. You either survive or die.
So you miss 1 key in a 5 key sequence, you die. :wtf:
Why not make it that you do not dodge/avoid the blow completely and walk away injured?
If you wish to avoid the injury, load and try it again. Not forced upon you to be 100% spot on.
Using the number of missed key press to determine the outcome can open up a bunch of possibilities.

I miss the days of competetive FPS like Americas Army, which was more realistic imo, you get shot, you bleed. You sprint you get tired and it affects your aiming. Smaller squad based battles which were more about tactics and solid teamwork. If you died, you stayed dead until the round ended! none this gung-ho crap where you just go balls to the wall cause you respawned if you died. Games where you just re-spawn sorta defeat the object for me. Also the fact that if you plaed longer than other, and had unlocked stronger weapons like battlefield are unfair for a new player. The new player may get the jump on another, but doesnt have all the benefits of upgrades etc and loses anyways. I think this is one of the biggest things I dislike about battlefield.

Bring more co-op games like rainbow 6, SWAT, Ghost recon, where solid squad based co-op missions were possible. SWAT was awsome with all the gadgets etc...

America Army was my last big FPS game, I competed in the SA leagues, played for one of the top teams in South africa, but the politics between admins and people with power ruined it for many. I have been put off FPS because of this....but I miss the Genre. We used to have weekly clan matches and league compos, it was REALLY intense,.....yoh! But it was fun! Now I prefer to play single players FPS now and then when I have nothing else to do, or the need takes me...

Bring back proper skilled FPS games! Viva! :D
