Despite "isolated" incidents of violence against foreigners, South Africa's general population is a friendly and welcoming, President Jacob Zuma said on Wednesday.

"South Africa is a hospitable country and South Africans are welcoming to foreigners," he said in a speech prepared for delivery in Midrand.

"Between 2006 and 2011, South Africa registered more than 816,000 new asylum applications, making it by far the top destination for asylum-seekers..."
 
When I read this, I remembered that Wimpy advert, the one where the obviously Afrikaans girl tells her boyfriend: "Ag Henry, I love it when you talk foreign too me..."

But this is actually true yes. I spoke to exchange students yesterday (they are from the Netherlands) and they were so scared to walk through the streets of Pretoria, as the were told that they would be raped and murdered then raped again and then a lion will eat their corpse...

But since coming here, they said that everyone is so friendly. They love it here. Same happened in 2010 with the World Cup.

Maybe it's also my blinding love I have for this country that makes me naive, but I have to agree with them as well...
 
i was watching Top Gear the other night and was quite sad to hear that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes, baddie in latest Star Trek movie) was carjacked while on holiday in SA, on the N2 on the East Coast... i guess he just drew the short straw?

In the suburb where I live and work there are a lot of Congolese and Malawians around, while generally being rather loud they are actually really friendly themselves, honestly I find them to be friendlier than most locals that I have been dealing with.
 
Apparently foreigners make great employees, especially those from Zim. They work harder, strike less and are more respectful to their employers when compared to SA labour. Apparently our work ethics amongst those in the lower income brackets is terrible compared to their Zim rivals, thus why they seem to get jobs while SA guys miss out.

Its kinda sad when you think how they are losing jobs to foreigners until you realise that employers don't believe SA labour respects the jobs they have and that's why they are losing them to foreigners. The result is Zuma needs to say thing like this to counter the sentiments of many.

Not to mention that most Zimbabweans are more educated than most of our locals.
 
Zuma is pretty persistent with his "tell it like you want it to be & ignore reality" angle.

Easily. They are thankful to have a job. Meanwhile the locals are in extreme cases demanding 100% increases (lol).
