Hi guys,

Just starting this thread for any musicians out there who'd like to chat. I'm a session drummer in the Cape Town metal scene and I love chatting with other drummers and musicians. I've been drumming for 6 years and took lessons for the first 3 years. I started playing metal when I was 16 and I've been playing metal ever since.

This is my setup:

What bands have you played for in Cape Town? Live or just recording?

Played for The Impalement Theory, Marching Dead, Blud, As Daylight Dies, I See Thunder and some other bands who needed help in the studio. I'm currently working out something with When Karma Sleeps and busy with a metal internet band with a couple buddies as well for fun.

I love playing metal. Always been a favourite for me.

 
I used to play bass in a band (well, 2 actually)

still trying to get the MyG band together :D

I've been doing both. More on the recording side though. A lot of recording at the bands' studios as well as the SAE Studios (School of Audio Engineering) and then I've also been sent the tracks and I've then recorded my parts at home which lets me mess around with some different ideas.

Awesome stuff dude. Seen When Karma Sleeps and Marching Dead a ROAR a few times (I think it was them...)

Yeah played at Roar many many times. Currently working on big things with some mates of mine. Something quite different to what the local scene is used to so that should be good.

The local metal scene is looking good, there are a crapton of great bands out there, so the more good shit that comes out , the better. Although some (who shall remain nameless) seem to get the lions share - conveniently. :p

Haha yeah there a lot of better bands coming out now but most of the new, young bands with youngsters in them are getting quite cocky nowadays which doesn't end well for them.

Used to play in band - but soon realized band politics is not my thing. Started playing in 1998 - but I was forced to sell my acoustic kit recently (neighbors) and the Vdrums I bought I sold to buy a synth, a new PC and and some software (it was a TD3 - so no loss).
Dig the old school stuff - also a huge Lamb of God/Dimmu Borgir/CoF/Arch Enemy/Insomnium all those - but my fave drummer is Carter from Dave Matthews.

I love Carter Beauford. Such a great drummer. A huge influence to me is Matt Kuykendall (ex-All Shall Perish) and Lech from As Blood Runs Black.

I can watch him play for hours. Favorite metal drummesr are probably Martin Å karoupka and Chris Adler.

I always found Chris Adler to be a little boring for me. I love the technicality of Matt Kuykendall.

Are you a big fan of rudiments? Did you ever take lessons? Paul Bothners is having a Drum Day on August 10th (Saturday) at their N1 City Value Center branch. Should be pretty good.

One thing I like about Adler is his "simplicity" - not 'look how many rolls and blasts I can do in three seconds' kind of fashion.
Rudiments - diddles and drags? :D I never took 'official' lessons, learned from listening, DVDs and software mostly.
