Why do you pirate games?

eh I don't. Steam is cheap, convenient & legal.

Now if someone could do something about movies & series then that would be fabulous...

I think that if the software and movies were just more readily available (online store) and could be bought at the click of a button once your account has some money in it, almost no one would continue to pirate stuff...

Otherwise everyone will have to act like this: (please read full article)

Good read. It's partially for this reason that I do not pirate. If i can't afford it, I do not pirate it either. Save and wait until I can afford it. Piracy = Theft.

Too much of a hassle of getting a VPN working and then connecting via that and and and...also its sitting squarely in a moral grey area

This ^^^

I'd love to have this but it's not legally available in SA. Besides I am told that the VPN is tracked anyway.

Won't Netflix help in this regard?
Nope. Still breaking copyright...Netflix is not legally available in SA.

So still illegal, but now with the added benefit of paying a pile of money and additional hassle of VPNing. Oh and you need a very fast internet line.

also its sitting squarely in a moral grey area
Do you reckon? That to me was always the least of the issues. I mean I'm still paying for it, whether I'm sitting in jozi or new york makes little difference to me from a moral pov. Moral hair splitting imo. Hairsplitting is where laws excel.

Nah it's not theft. Theft removes it from the owner and gives it to somebody new. This creates a copy. But I still don't condone it.

Well I think so yes. I mean it's not really legal in SA. but there are ways of circumventing this. And at the end of the day the publishers and owners of the content get their money. But still, that part of illegal in SA is the one that bugs me a bit. So yes, for me it's a bit of a grey area. You make a very valid point though...

I haven't pirated a game in over two years. The last one was DNF. I wanted to play it just to see; to get closure. Would I have paid full price for it? I doubt it.

I too have gone and bought genuine copies of games that I pirated years ago. It feels so much more rewarding to have a legal copy of a game in its packaging sitting on the shelf. Even if I don't ever play it again, it's mine.

There are reasons why I used to pirate games. It is convenient sometimes, because it's a game that just isn't available anywhere locally, or even via digital distribution. Also, DRM and DLC -- I typically only buy GOTY editions nowadays because I want the full game, and I don't want to pay for cut content. I have a slow internet connection, so I don't want to do a lot of downloading, so GOTY editions of games with all the content on the disc is ideal. I generally wait for prices to come down on games. You'd be surprised that if you wait a while, you can get it for a good price. I don't ever pre-order games or buy it at full retail price, because I know the price will come down soon enough. That, and I like to read the reviews as a sort of guideline.

And call it being paranoid, but I don't really like the idea of game cracks, because of the reported malware risk.

This is why antivirus software is such a benefit. Not that I encourage the downloading or use of cracks; it's illegal after all.

Well, most of the detections are usually false positives, I suppose its because of how the cracks work that they get flagged by anti virus software.
I can't remember the last time I pirated a game. Used to get them on LANs when I was still studying but these days I just buy them all. Less issues with updating and game patches and sometimes parts of the game not working properly.

I don't pirate often. I use to pirate games when I was at Varisty, and couldn't really afford them. Honestly though, no regrets, its most likely the reason I still play games today and now buy them. The last couple games I pirated where Duke Nukem forever and Rage, both games I played about an hour and never again. Didn't enjoy them, if I thought they were any good I would have bought them.

gaming is an expensive hobby. investing in a big game without taking it for a drive is like buying a car without taking it out for a spin. i only ever pirated a game when there was no demo available. these days fewer and fewer games have demos, but thankfully my Steam backlog has helped me keep busy without the need to pirate a game in probably a decade.

things like youtube and Metacritic also assisted me in deciding if i want to make a purchase so no need to pirate anything to test drive any more. yay for me being a goodie two shoes!

Oh yes, while I don't really pirate games and software like I mentioned before, I actually do kinda pirate music. I basically go onto Jango and download the music as I listen to it. I mostly listen to Gospel music though so it is a nice way to get exposed to new artists and types of music and take some time to get used to it to see if I like it... So when I eventually get to a store and the music is available, I'll buy like a bunch of CDs to catch up. A lot of it (especially the rarer genres) are kinda hard to come by in SA.

I will download a game from time to time, but I wouldn't consider myself a full-blown software pirate. Basically I'll download a game if I'm really interested in it, but I'm not sure if I'm going to like it or if I can't find it anywhere else or have some other issue buying it. I NEVER finish a game I downloaded though, I basically use the downloaded copy like a demo and if I like the game I buy it, if not I delete the image. An example would be Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. I downloaded it when it was leaked a little while before it came out, played about 2 hours and knew I would love it so I stopped playing. Since I don't have a credit card I asked a friend of mine to buy it for me when it was cheap during the Steam sale and I have since finished the game.

I pirate to test out a game and if I really really like it.. I'd buy a copy. Games are just too expensive.

I prefer to download mini images over cracks.
It's how I'm playing Dragon Age; for it's online functionality as well.
