Nice surprise

So yesterday, someone at my work had a dilemma with a database for a personal project, basically, she had lost the data in one column, and she needed to do a bit of text manipulation on another column to repopulate it, and there were thousands of records so it would take forever to do it manually, so I helped her to do it with a bit of SQL. It probably took 10 minutes, and I didn't think much of it, but I found this on my desk this morning.

I couldn't even think why someone would give me a present till she said it was from her to say thanks for the help. It's so nice to get a surprise like that, and a lekker start to the day.

This would go nicely in the TK Coffee Inception pictures!

It's good to see that people value the skills that us IT people have... this "quickly fix my IT problem for me" stuff irritates me!

Put it this way, if I helped someone with a 15 minute SQL issue for my company, I would charge enough to buy one of those as well. So well done to you, and to the person who gave it to you! Well deserved!

Ag it was a small thing if you know how, and it was a personal favour, not something I would have charged for. Would have been even easier if it were SQL Server, and not MySQL that I could only access on a PhpMyAdmin site, but she was happy because she says it would have taken her weeks worth of late nights to fix up manually.

I actually had a similar thing with a client the other day where I told her that she had to make some major changes to a spreadsheet to be able to import it properly, and she was all dismayed because she also thought it would take weeks to fix up, so I sent her an updated version of her spreadsheet half an hour later. She was all wow, how did you do that? Is there a way I can do these things quicker, so I said I used formulas in Excel to generate insert statements, then wrote a SQL statement to create a temp table, and run the inserts on that, then select everything from that table, and paste the results back into Excel. That explanation didn't really help her though.

I had also got a bottle of J&B rare whiskey from one our sales executives for running with her project on a big deal.

The irony, however, is that the first drink I had from it is when I handed in my resignation yesterday. :(

Lucky, ive got a bottle of kwv 5 year old before and recently fixed a file association just by downloading a reg file and running it and got a box of lindt chocolates.

People dont realise the amount of kak IT goes through and all that we ask is a simple (but meaningful) thank you but bribery does help :p

Lol...nice!

I have saved many people's asses with my IT skills and never gotten a bottle of whisky (Even if i dotn drink whisky)

People here are to stingy....so I charge for my time :D Record to date was R10 000 for 3 days of work, doing data recovery for a fraud investigation case :D <- Studying security analyst / white hat hacker..
