Windows 8.1 geared for public release soon

Also, will Windows 2012 also be getting the update?

Seems they are making progress in making Windows 8 more usable. I'll still stick to Windows 7 for now (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). Have they fixed the colour schemes on Office 2013 yet? Those initial colours were "fugly".

More seriously, will Windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 with a service pack

When its out, it'll be a free update that you can opt to download from the Windows Store.

AFAIK, the 8.1 update also has some things for Server 2012, but I'm not sure how that side's coming along. I saw a leak somewhere...

Also, no to the Office colours. I agree, they're boring as hell, but they're staying that way for now, until someone hacks it.

I really hope the start button is nothing like the button on the beta release. All it does is switch between your traditional desktop and metro.

I think that is exactly what it will do. MS was pretty clear about now bringing back the Start menu so all the Start button does is bring up metro rather than trying to move the mouse to a specific corner of the screen.

Well that's pretty pointless, my windows key already does that.

That's Microsoft "innovation" for you. They pretty much have a tendency to force their will on their customers and then later backtrack if they see it flops. The Start button in Windows 8.1 is a "partial" backtrack. I'll wait and see what they do with this release and if it is easy enough to use, I'll load it on one of our people's laptops if we need to reload one or get a new laptop and see how they do with it.

Just be carefully it seems the update breaks most anti virus protections.

Must say that classic shell has saved me a lot of frustrations.

Hopefully it's not codenamed "blue" for the colour it makes your screen go :D

More seriously, will Windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 with a service pack, or is this a whole new version that needs a new license?

Got my first BSOD on 8 the other day - must say, it's a lot friendlier than it used to be!

Still waiting on the release of Windows 9, this just seems like a Vista re run.

I wouldn't say its anything near as bad as vista, my pc seems to run really well with 8. Just some of the UI elements aren't great, actually just to have the old start button would be nice.

Windows 8 has lots of small things that is better. the problem comes there is no breadcrumbs to guide new or non advance user to any feature. Aka if you do not use the keyboard its hard to find what you are looking for.
