Firewall?

Avast and AVG have very weak /passive firewalls...but ok for normal browsing...ie: no crack/hack/porn sites :P careful for P2P sites as well...but it works very well for average users.
Drive by downloads have become a major issue of late...

we switched to Comodo Internet Security now, seems to be working.... I think

wow thanks for the quick responses!
i have avg and it works fine for me...
i just though something was wrong because it used to work

Some are much better than others...I have been using Kaspersky for a long time now, one of the best imho.

Pain in the ass in beginning as it wants permission set for everything that happens, but its one of the best I have used for a long time... and im in the IT security game ;)
Thats more of a HIPS than an AV, but same difference I suppose.

True in a way...its all part of the package tho, including firewall.

Nothing can evern write to registry without letting you know, so nice for those sneaky installs, easier to block ;) its just a pain in the ass in the begginning if you are not sure, or not used to that type of software.

Hi guys!
You know that thing you paid so much money for? Windows 7? Well, while all of you paid for it I pirated it and got it free. Now will you please help me troubleshoot some problems.

There. That sounds a bit more accurate.

Anyway, google that error code. If nothing conclusive comes up, consider a format. If there's one thing I've learned in my time working in the IT industry, it's that a format is like a magic 'Fix All' button.

I've seen enough viruses target the windows firewall that by now if I for some reason can't turn on certain security features, I would just format asap.

well like I said, we're using Comodo now and seems to be working fine
No. Comodo runs a wicked HIPS & firewall combo, but they only recently moved into the anti-virus space.

-------------

AVs is a really kak story because you can't differentiate between "my AV works" vs "my AV is blind as a bat". You have literally *zero* indication of false positives and *zero* indication of false negatives. So people turn to these reviews for proof (e.g. AV comparatives). Now I can tell you if I were in the AV business thats the first measurement I'd try to game. Looks good on paper, useless in practice.

----
Background/protip: Virus writers run their viruses against *all* the major AVs and rewrite it until it doesn't show (virustotal website streamlines this process). So when the AV companies say they catch 1 bazillion viruses you can be dead certain that doesn't include the newly minted one our favorite evil person just wrote. Meaning all this marketing & d!ck measure via stats is pure horsesht. The emphasis should be more on fast reaction time to emerging threats. On that front I've got the feeling that Kaspersky might be leading the pack, but its pretty close (symantec is on the ball too on this front).
----

So ultimately it comes down to the user making the right calls. Thats it. Nothing else. An AV is like an airbag in a car...once it gets to that stage you've fcked up pretty solidly already.

-------------

That being said, my personal - very subjective - opinion:

AVs: Kasperky, nod32, avg, mse, avast, panda, avira, bitdefender are all ok. Eset, McAfee and Trend should also be okish. I'm running mse at the moment due to convenience, but readers should be warned that there are concerns about it in certain circles.

Firewalls...I like the comodo one (kak interface aside), but with firewalls if its set up well then you're pretty much winning regardless of brand

HIPS...go for a brand name one. There are some nasty free ones out there. Anything reasonably well known or associated with a major AV brand should be fine.

I haven't actually been contemplating the decision to move to Comodo, even though it uses less bandwidth; since bandwidth usage isn't a problem for an uncapped line, I'll stay with Avast -- hasn't led me wrong, yet.

HIPS - personally I rate its too much of a hassle, but if you feel like it then put some time into setting it up. It'll def provide real benefits (even if only learn what apps attempt to do what).

AV - as per above...any of that list should be fine. Skip the Comodo AV if you can. As I said they are +- new at it so I'm still a bit meh about it.

Firewall - only really needed if you feel the need for control. 3G default APNs block incoming by default and ADSL routers are usually set up with NAT, which kinda/sorta/almost does the same thing as a firewall (keep windows firewall active anyway). NB if you dial out ADSL connections from your PC then you definitely need a firewall. Windows one should be OK if its active. I generally just install a firewall to A) see wtf is going on B) block crap that is interfering with my gaming.

Avoid using multiple programs doing the same thing at once. i.e. One firewall, one HIPS, one AV. They can all be from different suppliers though. Firewall & HIPS from same supplier makes sense though for convenience.

it will be when they decide to throttle you. but besides that, it's stealing your line speed
