Universal Pictures' take on Electronic Arts' Dante's Inferno video game has found a helmer in Fede Alvarez. Deadline reports that the Evil Dead director will tackle the adaptation of the game, itself loosely inspired by the first third of Dante Alighieri's 14th century epic poem, "The Divine Comedy."

Released in 2010, Dante's Inferno reimagines Alighieri as a Templar Knight traversing the nine circles of Hell to rescue the soul of his beloved Beatrice. Although the plot of the game represents a significant departure from the original text, the specific layout of Hell is directly inspired by Alighieri's words.

Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are set to produce alongside EA's Patrick O’Brien with Jay Basu (The Dinosaur Project, Fast Girls) having turned in the most recent draft of the screenplay.

Sweet! I love this game, still one of my favourites. Hopefully the movie isn't a trashy disappointment. They really have a lot to match up to in terms of the visual presentation pulled off by Visceral games.

Did any of you guys watch the animated movie? If so, is it worth getting?

It wasn't bad hey. Each segment was done by a different artist and director or something like that so it had different styles.

Hmmm I have to question why they want to make a movie from a game that was inspired by a book?

Why don't they just go straight to the book?

Isn't it like a couple of verses of a poem?

It's an epic poem, quite a bit more than a "few" verses, but yeah I think it will make a stupid movie as is. A movie based on the game could be very entertaining, as long as they don't do something stupid like try to make it PG13.

Hopefully they will not mess it up. might be good.
