Petrol percentage increases

Two key contributors, dollar price of oil and our currency. We have no control over the dollar price and only a little control over our currency.

Our petrol price has increased by over 560% in the last 15 years.

As the petrol price rises, so does the price of food, and well basically everything else.

Here is a link to an article detailing the price increases and that sadly, petrol was less than R2/l in 1998 :(

Ah 1998. That was the year I got my drivers licence. It was lekker, you could actually go and get R50 of petrol and it would be over half a tank

Well all in all, our petrol price compared to many, many other countries is pretty average to below average. Although with my hour one-way commute, I would looooove it to be R2/l again. Maybe just for a couple of months at least??

Which is why we should build more CTL plants and lose our dependency on oil which we don't have.

Wouldn't help. Sasol is a listed company they're there for the profits, fuel from sasol isn't cheaper at the moment.

But for Sasol to make fuel it is far cheaper. The reason Sasol is so powerful today is because of the Apartheid government and sanctions that were placed on SA. They can make fuel from coal profitably when the oil price is $50-60 we are almost double that at the moment. I would rather see South Africa use it's coal reserves for fuel and create a ton of jobs in the process, than keep on importing oil at a higher price.
