Computer sales eroded by tablets

This trend does pose some interesting questions:

Firstly, I take it these are sales figures of pre-built PC's. I wonder how the shipment and sales of individual PC components have fared against the rise of tablets. Consumers seems to be more keen on keeping their existing box and upgrading it to keep up than buying a brand new PC outright. With the money they save they can justify buying a tablet.

Secondly, can this global trend also have played some role in Valve moving to sell a Steam Machine? Surely they can see that their potential client base is moving away, slowly but surely, from traditional desktop PC's and onto either consoles and/or tablets. It would make sense.

Thirdly, how does laptop sales affect these figures? I didn't read any mention of laptop sales. And also how have these so-called Ultrabooks impacted the trend as well...

What? You want meaningful reporting and interpretation of statistics on myG? What is this I don't even...

I dont think Steam's move is based on declining computer sales, besides gaming PC's has always been a nich market and one that can not really be replaced with tablets. The 1st victim in PC sales are the mom & pop groups that normally just used the PC/Laptop to browse Facebook and get some mail.

If you want to look at where Valve's real fear lies you need to look at the new Windows OS, or more to the point the Windows App store that comes part of the OS. Gabe's income is being threatened in a big way because A. most of the tripple A developers are moving to their own online distribution platforms in the form of Origin and Uplay so that leave all the smaller houses which in the past would have been ok.

In comes Windows App store that gives smaller developers not only a new streamlined way to distribute their games but also one where a hurdle AKA 3rd part client is not needed anymore. Removing Steam totally from the picture.

Also remember Indie developer can now get games out for cheaper and target a broader base as the New Win RT API that allow them to target both Console and PC at the same time with a single code base/distributor.

TL;DR Windows Run Time that target PC & Console as well as new App store threaten their income.

PC sales can never really be counted.... because most PCs are either self built or just upgraded every now an the with a component or two.

This is what I was wondering. It's been a while since I bought a new computer. I have gone the upgrade route rather than new. And when I last night new it was not a pre built machine. It was fine from components ordered.

I cannot see how a tablet can ultimately replace the pc. It still fulfils several important functions. For me gaming and browsing the net just isn't the same on a tablet.

That is because home build falls under the game PC niche. Home build is not under thread in any way from tablets. Pre Build on the other hand is. People that buy pre-build are the same mom & pop's that can use a tablet just as well.

Since I've figured out how to build a PC I don't think I'll ever buy a pre-built PC again

Why do we put 'TL;DR' at the end of a piece of writing... I usually read all the way to the end and think dammit, could've just read the summary!

Well a tablet can't really compete with a pc when it comes to upgrades.A new Tablet version comes out every 6 months, but can't do justice to playing games like one can on a PC.

Tablets will never truly replace PC's. Not while billions are being spent to create GPU melting games. But the business sector, the sector that probably buys the lion share of pre-built PC's, are more likely to move to tablet and Ultrabook implementation, which will affect PC sales. Within a business environment, I would be lost without my tablet. I do virtually everything on it. But when I game, I got to where the horsepower is.

Tablets don't offer the full functionality of the modern PC. Most PC's are mostly self-built in any case. A greater comparison would be Windows vs Tablet Sales.

Well then I present to you the Windows Tablet!! :p

I must say working these last few months on a Windows 8 tablet has completely changed my mind about tablets. It's just so much easier and better for me in a work environment.

Someone needs to update that glorious PC masterace pic to include peasant Tablet users :p looks they are becoming a thing now.

Not surprised most businesses will use tablets as they portable and easier to use compared to a PC which is stuck in one spot. The only people who will buy pc's these days are usually gamers.

Laptops and Tablets are the future...
