Handling new MyGaming forum members

Another friendly hint for newbies; if you write 'u' because it's shorter than 'you,' most people are going to skip reading your post because it's shorter than taking the time to read it.

Please don't say 'u.' :(

Wow I thought I was dick to the nooblets

Well - the guidelines that James posted to kind of ask people to use proper grammar and spelling. The odd typo I can understand, but sheer laziness shouldn't be excused.

And it's probably better to skip/ignore a badly written post rather than rage at the culprit in the thread, which gets everyone involved.

True but I've also seen some his antics around the forum today and he seems enjoy acting the part of the anal hallmonitor.

Huh? I only asked the moderators if we could report spam comments and now I made a tongue-in-cheek post about people being too lazy to write out full words. I would hardly call that "antics" and I don't think that's me "acting the part of the anal hallmonitor" either, but if that's how you feel I come across, then I apologize for offending you.

Its not offensive, just funny how you pick a fight with someone for saying lol

But that's just the tone I'm picking up on

I don't think we're quite on the same wavelength here. The admin posted a thread entitled Guide for new MyGaming forum members, in which he says one-word replies such as "lol" are not permitted. I then asked the moderators if we should report such posts for moderation, to which the admin responded that we should.

At which point during this process do you think I was trying to pick a fight?

This thread in its current state...

I think you're mistaken, the phrase use was "will not be received as constructive criticism"

But I'm not going to get started with you

Even so, all I did was ask if we could report such posts, to which the admin responded that yes, we could. I still don't know what about this made you think I was trying to pick a fight with anyone.

But seeing as you don't want to 'get started' with me, I'll leave it at that. I wasn't looking for an altercation here. You clearly misjudged my intent and I tried to settle it amiably, but you don't seem to be interested in doing that, so maybe it's best we just go our separate ways then.

I wasn't even referring to that incident the noob thread

If you guys are going to keep up with this, please take it PM, thanks.

If you guys are going to keep up with this, please take it PM, thanks.

....and this is why we are harsh on newbies sometimes.
Either:

Leave it alone.
Take it to PM's.
Criticize in constructive ways that are not suggestive or offensive in any way.
GTFO.

You guys are the ones continuing it. As I said in my last post, I've dropped it. Me and Ike009 had a difference of opinion, we couldn't come to a resolution and then I said I'll drop it and we each go our separate way. That should have been the end of it.

And while we're on it, it's not the regulars' place to be harsh on newbies and it's part of the problem discussed in the OP of this thread. I've noticed in my two months here that many people seem to think that being a regular gives you authority on the forums. That's what the moderators are here for. Have a look at the Alientake situation. He's obviously breaking the forum rules, but now instead of simply reporting him people feel the need to respond to his spam, which ends up aggravating the situation when it turns into a fight.

Meanwhile if he was simply reported, the mods would take care of him in due time, his posts would likely have gotten deleted and he would lose a fight to the banhammer. By tomorrow morning, everything would have been fine again in the land of Equestria.

Ike_009, what the hell is your problem?

I just got this neg-rep.

In response to this post.

These seem about right, especially after seeing other next gen game releases. All because battlefield didn't support it doesn't mean this can't. Also why does this person keep referencing most wanted? That used the chameleon engine not frostbite.

That's very strange, I was sure Most Wanted ran on Frostbite 2, but it seems you are correct.

Maybe because The Run used FB2, most people assumed Most Wanted does too?

:/

Please tell me, how is this justified? Is this not exactly what James was talking about in the OP?

If you were wondering why your forums have such a bad new-comer retention rate, this might be why.

I've contacted AlienTaker to explain why his posting style isn't appreciated and to give a fair warning. He's straddling the knife-edge between legit posts and spamming. Let's see how he responds. I don't simply immediately ban of infract someone for every report received.

For someone who accused me of being an "anal hallmonitor", his constant playing policeman on these forums as well as his looking for altercations is pretty ironic.

Aaaaaand this is exactly the kind of thing that should be taken to PM.

It is absolutely the regulars' place to lead the tone and feel of the forum. That is exactly why James made this thread in the first place. I missed the 'Alientake situation', but generally, on MyG, posts don't get reported very quickly as we have quite a lenient and free spirited community. If someone crosses the line, it will get reported, though. However, the mod turnaround isn't particularly quick, as we only have so many mods, and between reporting and mod intervention, people will continue a thread. It's inevitable.

Thanks, he's been getting on my nerves and I've seen the guys in TK also expressing their frustrations.

James said that the regulars are the leaders of the forum and its culture, but he did not say that regulars should take justice into their own hands. If a member is doing something wrong, either help them or report them to the mods. Don't post rude and/or snide remarks in response to his posts, because that aggravates the issue and just leads to further fights.

This is exactly what happened with AlienTake. He spammed the forums, so instead of waiting for devs to deal with it some members posted negative responses which led to a fight. You know what they say, you should never have too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Leave the moderating to the moderators.
