Handling new MyGaming forum members

Thanks for the reminder esteemed James. One hundred percent agreed though. The newbies must be encouraged. Who knows where the next "Eugene" will come from.

Not quite sure what to make of that. :wtf:

It's meant to read like this: "Eugene is a valuable asset to the forum. He is always giving out great advice and helping out with his knowledge of all things gaming. He makes the forum an even better place to hang around. So you never know when another newbie will also be the great person on the forum that Eugene has become."

I mean that. Every word. ;)

James said that the regulars are the leaders of the forum and its culture, but he did not say that regulars should take justice into their own hands. If a member is doing something wrong, either help them or report them to the mods. Don't post rude and/or snide remarks in response to his posts, because that aggravates the issue and just leads to further fights.

This is exactly what happened with AlienTake. He spammed the forums, so instead of waiting for devs to deal with it some members posted negative responses which led to a fight. You know what they say, you should never have too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Leave the moderating to the moderators.

I fail to see a fight that ensued from AlienTaker's post, but it might well have been deleted. That said, snide responses to spam is the norm here and on most of the internet. It's pretty much the MyG community being themselves (and, in a way, giving the tone of the forum). We've had some long standing members start out with spam-like post, who have become great contributors. Trying to make this lot be anything they're not would be like trying to herd chickens.

Chicken.

Chickens.

Chicks.

Wtf is the plural of chicken...? :wtf:

Anyway, I'm not sure if you noticed, but in the PC gaming short stick thread, there were quite a few forumites engaging AlienTaker on how to fit in with the community, in between the ribbing. The ones that try, they tend to stick like mud. The ones that don't.. Well, they don't.

I'm sorry that comment may be seen as slightly racist to the more sensitive types (present company excluded). Please change it to the correct analogy or something else.

Hehe, I believe the plural is chickens.

I guess I can see where you're coming from. If people leave constructive criticism it's fine, but the problem comes in when people leave destructive criticism in response to someone breaking the forum rules. The latter is more like to cause a fight, which just makes the situation worse at the end of the day.

What exactly is racist about it?

Indians is a widely used word for native Americans. I'm pretty sure most of us played cowboys and indians as children.

Edit: Also, why does it seem that I simply can't do anything without offending someone today? :(

Well, Clive, for what it's worth, I'm not offended and I agree wholeheartedly with the boldend (is that a real word?) part. When you see a new guy that is not following the rules, correct him in a civilized manner. If heeds the advice, everybody wins. If he doesn't, report. Getting nasty should be the final resort.

And so continues the days of our lives on a forum.

People seriously, a forum is an easy place to announce your opinions and frustrations we all know that. The opening post was to be a positive community building exercise.

Some of the responses i have read are utterly disturbing and disgusting of a growing community and handling different opinions. For bandwidth sake people take a step back and realize what your saying or even better the way your F'ing saying it when you respond.

I really love coming here and talking bullshit (and sometimes real life matters) with people in the TK and trying to be helpful in the sub forums like the hardware section. But when i see shit like this today in a thread that is intended to be positive, it really makes me think is this worth my time.

@James, please can we create a banter thread where anyone who has a real deal problem with something can bring it up and all the trash talk can happen there. That way if we choose to we can totally ignore it and the people that have opinion problems can vent there.

Come on guys, pull it together we are here for gaming and growing relationships.

Isn't that what TK is for?

In response - if the sort of stuff that went down in this thread was in TK we would have stopped it and moved them out swiftly.
