Steam: gifting someone a game you aren't playing anymore.

I have two separate Steam accounts with different usernames. One I created almost 4 years ago that is dormant and one I created a while ago which is the account I use frequently.

I have my Half-Life 2 and a few other games registered on my old account and want to send it over to my new account.

I want to see if I can use "gifting" to possibly send the games in the old account to the new one. I have added the accounts to each of their friends lists.

My questions are:
  1. Is this possible?
  2. If so, how do I send a game from my old account to my new one?

I will not be needing my old account anymore so I want to de-register the games on it and transfer it to the new account.

Thanks.

  1. No it's not.
  2. ???
  3. Profit

If you're in the Family Sharing Beta, you could possibly try that. It's not gifting, but it's something similar. I haven't tried it myself yet. Only a few games support it at the moment, so it's not really possible until Valve finishes their work on it.

What I'm thinking is to maybe backup the games in my old account and restore it into the new account. This might work.

You can't, once a game is registered to an account its there for keeps. Like The_Imp said, you can try the Steam account sharing feature, but it won't allow you to move games from one account to another unfortunately.

You can not transfer games from one account to another, Even Steam support is hopeless here. Ask me I tried to get games from my old account some time ago. Ended up reaquering the games and let the account just fade into the past.

Your best way to go would be with the new Family sharing option (Currently in Beta)

I have my Steam account shared to my son, and he can see & play my games asif its his with his own achievements and so on. Only limitation is that we can not play MP games at the same time. SP games one of us normally go into offline mode so that both can play.

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to buy the games again. Not too fazed about it though as it is old games but it would have been nice to have my collection on my new account.

Thanks for the help guys.

Don't. Just wait for family sharing to leave beta. When I did it Family sharing was not even a word yet over at Valve.

I will show you a screenshot after 8 of how it looks. Son busy playing on his hour between studies and will kill me if I bug him in his limited play time. :(

As promised screenshot of how your library will look when its family shared:

In thumbnail view, all the games are mixed:

He is able to install any of my games and play them asif he owns them So I am sure this will work for you. Just share the old account with your new one and you good to go.

Would be absolutely AMAZING if you could gift games you have in your library, but alas it does not make financial sense for Valve to do that.
