My apologies if this has been posted, I did check first and couldn't find anything and thought I should share.

And some more reading for those interested...IGN

I must say, I am extremely keen to see this evolve and to see what it becomes. Some intriguing and innovative piece of hardware.

Thoughts?

I like
I want

All I actually need is the controllers x 2 and then its no XBone for me this year as my 360 is still fine.

While I can see the appeal for console gamers, between my current PC and PS3, I don't see any need for something like this (for myself). Plus I already have a cable running to my living room with an XBox controller so I pretty much already have the ability to choose where I want to play. And again, the main reason why I prefer my PC over any console (including the new Steambox), is because it is multi-purpose. Work & Play.

Viper - Valve did mention something to that effect. Its not intended to replace the PC side. Its mainly intended to capture the audience that doesn't have a Steam PC setup, but wants something in the middle between PC & consoles.

Ah ok... For them it would work great then.

Or someone like me that have a Media PC + Console but sometimes would love to play my PC games on the big screen.

The thing about this Steam machines that everyone keeps forgetting is that Valve is not going to be selling "Console PC's". They are just providing demo boxes for people to iron out the issues. The main focus of this move is SteamOS + controllers, you can build your own box to whatever specs in any PC case you want, or like in my set-up simply load SteamOS on the media PC that is under the TV already.

Looks like a modder got their hands on a dell small form factor pc lol
Darn, pic too large to have inline... here's what I'm talking about: Dell pc

Wonder what the price is going to look like in RSA. A pc of similar spec is going to cost more than R10k O_O

Sounds about right.

The other thing that just occurred to me. This might also be useful when upgrading to a new PC - depending on how the resolutions play out PC side the old PC might just be sufficient as a steambox.

I still don't get this, there is no need for them to release something like this.
Your better off just buying a pc or having one built for you. You'll end up with the exact specs for less money.
Its like people that go and buy alienware X51 pc's, Pay R18 000 for it and then it comes with a GTX660??? lol WTF.

I'll build you a better "steam box" ;)

I am very excited for this! With Steam OS it'll kick any other system's bumsses as it'll be optimized for gaming. I also like the controller as I come from PS3 gaming and love playing FPS' with a controller. It will be a huge learning curve for PC users unfortunately but you should be able to connect a mouse and keyboard to it as there are loads of connections. It's essentially just a compact PC beast.

You'll be able to run Steam OS on your normal desktop as well, so no it won't really kick any other systems ass, that all depends on specs, and everything that is available for them to use is available to us.

That exactly is the idea. ;) Valve is just releasing a couple of prototypes to set a benchmark - get the ball rolling so to speak. Long term the plan is to have multiple vendors releasing their own version - or you just download the OS and stick it on a custom build.

Essentially their commoditizing consoles - and I think there *is* a need for that.
