In-game graphics better than pre-rendered cut-scenes

When in-game graphics are better than pre-rendered cut-scenes does it spoil the game (a bit) for you? For me it does and I would just like to know if anyone else feels this way or if I'm bitching about nothing.

When I hear a game runs on Unreal Engine 3, especially if it's an awesome game like DMC or Batman AA, I normally cry inside. I'm not 100% sure I actually mean this, but I think I prefer a game with lower end graphics that has amazing cut-scenes (YAY Blizzard) over a game with amazing graphics with lackluster cut-scenes .

When I sit in front of a pc game, I'm there to play games, not watch a movie. So when they spend more time on the pre-rendered cutscene, I'm disappointed, because that's less time spent on the awesome game. Batman AA comes to mind. AWESOME game, couldn't give 2 shits that the pre-rendered stuff was worse than graphics, because when I remember a game I damn sure don't think back to all those cut-scenes....do you?

True that you sit there to play games, but in my opinion there are some excellent cut-scenes that really add to the gaming experience.

Oh of course, in no way was I saying cut-scenes are stupid, but OP was implying that cut scenes looking worse than the game IS stupid and potentially ruins the game, and I just cannot agree with that ludicrous concept :P

Depends on the game really, but honestly i think a good game should have good cut scenes, don't you think it shows how much attention is paid to a game and how much effort and pride is put into its production if the videos are crap?

I do, one of the reasons I play a game's campaign is for the story and bad cut-scenes make the story feel less immersive (not sure if I put that right). Warcraft is a really good example of a game with excellent game-play yet I remember very few of the campaign scenarios. Most of the cut-scenes however, I remember very clearly!

Arthas killing his father, Archimonde being killed by the wisps and the end when Grom dies :(

Batman is a great game, but I wouldn't give the game-play most of the credit. It's production value was seriously high, it was a really accurate portrayal of the Batman universe and, in comparison to other unreal engine cut-scenes, it's cut-scenes were great. If those scenes looked anything like the promotional trailers the game could only have been better.

My bad...thought you'd used the wrong syntax in your post. Usually a spoiler tag is hideable... guess this forum doesnt allow that :P

I oddly agree. I always find when the cut-scene looks worse, it breaks immersion. I think its because you would expect that the cut-scene would at least look like in game graphics. Its as if they went to the trouble of making it worse.

I do not mind it that much.

This is the opposite to what really grinds me. Crap game FX with actual dvd or better filmed cut scenes. Nothing is worse for me than a 2 gig game with 10 gig of video files.

I think the best thing to do is have cut scenes scripted and not pre-rendered :D

I think games with good graphics and crap cut scenes or stylized graphics (Dishonored?) are worse. It's fine if you can skip them but games with cut scenes that can't be skipped or into scenes are even worse .. i.e Hitman Absolution at the start of every level.

The ultimate baddy for me with cut scenes was Max Payne. Those stupid unskippable cut scenes while I'm running around trying to stop a kidnapping or something breaks the immersion completely - can't work out if I watching a movie or playing a game, totally lost interest in the game after 30 min.

I found Dishonored absolutely beautifully done.

Never play Metal Gear Solid then ^_^

That's EXACTLY how I feel! Games don't need to have Final Fantasy levels of CGI, they just need to match the cut-scene with the game's graphics... Street Fighter IV and Saints Row the Third are good examples (their cut-scenes aren't AMAZING but because they match the graphics it doesn't bother me).

I don't like those either, sometimes I'm enjoying the cut-scenes and they ruin it with pointless gameplay (like you have to hit the guy once or do something that they could've just put in the video) or I'm enjoying the gameplay and you'll have these unnecessary cut-scenes (like when you're fighting a boss and you've reached the halfway point of it's life then they'll show a unskippable clip... it's cool the first time but if you're struggling to beat the boss and you have to go through all the cut-scenes over and over, it's frustrating as hell).

300th post whoop whoop

Even though I'm a HUGE graphics-whore, what makes a game for me is:

Story telling
Soundtrack (if it's suited to the type of game)
Immersion
and
Interactivity

Cut-scenes do play a pretty standard role in games, as they are there to provide story and possibly information on what's to happen next. It is nice to see when 'pre-rendered' scenes had effort put into them (graphically superior to in-game graphics), though, it may have the possibility to reduce immersion, as the graphic fidelity changes. Consistency is important as well.
