Buy local: minister

South Africans must be encouraged to buy local products, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said on Tuesday.

"It's significant in terms of job creation, revenue and service delivery," he said at the launch of the 'Buy SA Back' campaign in Sandton, Johannesburg.

"We are running with the initial phase [of the campaign] before the festive season, because it is important to buy local."

International is cheaper, problem is that stock isn't always readily available (waiting for a week or so for a container to arrive for example)

If the Rand was stronger international things would be even cheaper (imagine having the rand on par with the dollar and paying R40 for a game :D)

Only if SA products can compete with international products on quality. I refuse to buy inferior quality products made by inefficient local companies who go on strike and are unable to provide support for their products because of legislation passed by your office Rob Davies.

But SA doesn't make Assassins creed games, PC components and samsung phones. We don't have any cool local products.

However as a point of reference its cheaper to grow a chicken in Brazil, place it in a freezer, fill a generator with diesel so the freezer can cross the ocean before landing in a SA dock after which it is trucked to pretoria than it is to get a Rainbow chicken sent from the free state. Or at least it was when they where striking and my dad had to ship from brazil to keep his KFC stores running.

I agree with you on that locally produced products are 80% of the time up to shit if i may use that word

i recently bough a pair of new gloves for biking and i have had to return them twice so i decided to buy me a set of alpinestars glove
From indonesia and boy are they awesome, also local support for our local products is also very poor when it comes to replacing or fixing an item

Excellent call by the Minister. Just a pity he hasn't guarded against the Chinese flooding and killing off local trade with their cheap (and sometimes nasty) products.

Mate of mine is in the shoe and leather trade. His call is that the local manufacturers are getting shut down by the Chinese who are flooding the market. They are struggling to compete with their prices.

Constitution, Government and Labour rules and policies also overly protect the worker and minimum wage. It has the effect of making local products expensive compared to some of the imported stuff. In the long run, it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy local.

Minister Davis, I would love to buy local, but what are you doing to stimulate local industries?

I just saw the contradiction, SA and the ANC are always out there trying to strengthen trade with China (who are happy to pay bribes to flood the market) yet they are also out there saying support local.
Local business is failing so the ANC decides to open Chinese trade which then places more strain on SA business. Doesn't help that workers rights are also catered to destroying businesses.
