Why are online gamers jerks?

So I watched this interesting video about - you guessed it - Why some online gamers are complete a$$holes online.

So here's my personal hypothesis on this matter. Most people who are assholes online behave this way because they have personal/social issues in their real life. They find that being an ass/ internet tough guy/ troll/ hacker helps them to feel better about themselves. They reject their miserable real world circumstances and choose to spend more time in the online world as the complete opposite of themselves in some cases in order to compensate.

And some people are just plain born assholes. :P

What do you guys think?

 
Not all online Gamers are.

I do occasionally swear on the BF4 hardcore servers because of all the snipers and their one-hit-wonder weapons.
 
I have to admit though.

I am not innocent. To be honest I think no one is.

I sometimes indulge in smack talk and doing things to make people angry online because I find it hilarious.

The question is though.. Is online gaming better without it? Does it add to the experience? I think it comes with the territory.. If you don't like it, then you should rather LAN.

As stated in the vid, people will be jerks because you don't really know who they are in real life, and vice-versa.

Not know my player X then player Y can say and do what he wants without serious implementations. Unless of course there is a admin around, ban his ass for being a jerk/tool/troll/ass-hat/douche, you get the point.

I know many of us are not saints, but sometimes the best thing to do is know when and how far to take it. If people are giving me grief....

No VISA required, cash is accepted :p

Why are online gamers jerks? Why are people jerks in general? I think insecurity has a lot to do with it; maybe it's the only place they feel that they have any locus of influence.

Most often, I think, it's just plain boredom: confrontation is infinitely more entertaining than boredom.

Thanks! Corrected it, must have been asleep in latin class that day. Or it could be some people are genuine jerks and they take it online.

I dunno, most people really aren't asshats in real life--I think that many of them are just cowards hiding behind a keyboard and monitor.
 
Maybe it's people that has little to no social interaction in their life, and do not know how to just be themselves online that behave like that. There's also a difference between being sincerely pissed off with someone online and just being a trolling asshole.

But for those that don't know how to consistently manage their personality, depending on their situation and environment, will probably just let go and behave like the monkeys we all really are. Haha.
 
Its the same reason as taking your gta character and killing civilians. say what you want to people with no consequences.

they not really assholes, they're just enjoying some freedom and stuffing around. the things I have been 'chooned' yas.....but I just laugh it off, I know they'd never say such things to my face. If they did, well then...dem's fightin wurds, put up yer dukes!
 
Besides people being jerks what really puts me off about online gaming are the steep skill curves you have to compete against and regulars not being noob friendly lol.
Not everyone spends as much time playing the game than certain groups of people, causes lots of imbalances which it makes not very fun to play. :(
Call me a noob all you want but it sucks to be on the receiving end of this.

There was a while ago s post about some kid threatening to kill another kid over an internet game and the next day the police busted down his door and he's being prosecuted.

I've had someone tell me the worst things about my mother just because i knifed him 5 or 6 times in a row after he camped in the same spot.

My comeback to someone that has something to say about my mom(rest her soul) is "so i guess your into necrophilia then Good luck with that" and then they just keep quiet (i think they go look up what that means)

But you will always get the douches in gaming always same as with sport specially rugby go look at how many there are.

And some of these guys are loaded up on booze when they play so they are a bit more aggro :p

Just made me think of this lol :p But honestly though, mom insults are so commonplace it rarely illicits any aggression tbh, but I guess in your unfortunate case it does.

+1, certain communities are far more toxic than other communities. Just choose your friends better :P
 
I don't generally bother talking to people not on my friends list, but I figure people rage the same way we swear at other people and taxis in the traffic, there's no actual real confrontation, the only difference is that the people can hear you...
 
Biggest irk is the lack of originality.

Troll/agro person: <questions your sexuality, repeat until you respond>
you: <responds>
Troll/agro person: <drags your mom/sister/any other related female person into conversation>
