R.I.P Winamp

I miss Sonique. I always preferred it to Winamp. Loved the early skins and visual styles. Fond memories :D

Sonique FTW! It's a shame Sonique2 never really took off - the skinning engine was really awesome for it's time. Also the visualizers for Sonique were so much better (RabbitHole!).

Anway, once sonique died I moved over to Foobar and haven't looked back.

What do you guys think of Media Monkey as a possible alternative? I've used it quite a bit previously and found it quite feature rich. It had flaws as well of course.

I was just going to ask about alternatives. Winamp is also my favourite. I do use Windows Media Player for videos or just double clicking on a mp3, but for anything with a list / library / favourites, I use Winamp.

Will take a look at this MediaMonkey.

I used to use Songbird as an alternative but I see they got shutdown in June :(

I stopped using Winamp years ago, i just use Youtube for anything i need / want to listen to now.

Plus my HDD with all my music died and cba to get it all again.

I use it for two features, that work reasonably well:
1) Podcast grabbing. It's as simple as getting the RSS link and psting it in, and MediaMonkey does the rest.
2) Wifi sync with MediaMonkey on android. This is a beta feature atm, but I've been using it for the past few months now. Music on a playlist syncs quickly. The only issue I've come across is podcast syncing failing on the last 100 kb of the file.

I must admit that I just use Windows Media Player now. Used to use winamp.

Like Roomys said, youtube is just easier these days.

You know you can still just use winamp right? I'm sure there will be loads of websites hosting the last version for years to come.

If you really want to change, I would suggest Foobar2000. It has a fairly steep learning curve but imho is the best music-only player out there.

My current setup:

I've tried foobar a few times, but within a week I'd be back on Winamp. I don't want a music player with a big learning curve, I've got a day job for that already. I want a music player that plays music quickly, with a decent playlist/queuing system. Nothing more, really.

Way to big a footprint for me to ever even think of using it also takes forever to open (By Winamp 2.9 standards)

Well the learning curve is more related to customization, more than anything else. I fyou happy to stick with the default interface, it shouldn't be that hard to use. When it comes to playing music quickly it does that for sure.

Not sure what playlist/queuing features you need specifically but foobar pretty much does it all. Anyway, different strokes for different folks I guess.

Really? I'm pretty sure it has the smallest footprint of the other alternative players listed above. Mine is up and running almost instantly and I've never had issues with it's mem usage. But it's been years since I've even looked at winamp. Anyway, just offering up another alternative for those interested in looking.

Noooooooo!!! I can't use any other media player.
So grabbing the latest version and keeping it in a secure storage and zipped for added protection.
RIP. You really whipped the llama's ass!

I've tried fubar and and to me it really stands just for that if you know what fubar means :p (Foorbar actually) i like a simple yet sleek music player that does what i want it to do without going through a bible of steps to work like i want it

i'll stay with winamp like i said until it refuses to work anymore then i'll look at media monkey

Something that is good but costs a bucket load of money is this "J. River Media Center" unless you can acquire it by other means "whistling:

it's not one of the best or brightest but does a couple of nifty things :)

But currently media monkey is rated the best out there and our beloved winamp is at 2 :D

i thought this was a joke... it seems like WinAmp is as much part of my PC history as Microsoft... RIP indeed!

Yeah, I'll probably stick with Winamp as long as possible... Until it becomes incompatible with some future version of Windows or something.

Terrible news... I love Winamp!! Not only for managing my playlists, but also for getting track ID's (will this function still work in a month's time??)... Is there any other music player able to do that...for free?

Nothing comes close to Picard MusicBrainz not even Winamp :D

That puppy can track down songs even if you have zip in the tag/filename......
