The minimum wage of domestic workers will rise from next month, Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant announced on Friday.

From December 1, the minimum wage of those working more than 27 hours a week in metropolitan areas will be R9.63 an hour, while that of their rural and small-town counterparts will be R8.30, her department said in a statement.

Why december, they work for like a month and then go on paid leave for 3 weeks over christmas.

it's done before Christmas so those with families can have a little more to spend for their families even if it is something small, we give our maid a Christmas hamper and a bonus every year in Dec along with her normal wage but she only works once a week for us.

R9.63 an hour?

That is disgustingly close to nothing.
How can we be paying people so little?

You should pay the minimum wage, but put in a bit extra to pay for what you think their work is actually worth...

Working for one day i can earn more than they earn in 3 days....

That is a pathetic amount of money...

Just remember 70% of them gets government subs too for the amount of kids they have and what rural area they live in
And remember with that minimum wage none of the next mentioned are included (food during the day, transport, washing facility, all your throw away clothes among other things)

I know it's a very small amount of money but before there was a minimum wage they used to get way less and had to provide their onw food during the day

But at least they have something, think about the other 30-40% that have no income at all. Make the minimum to large and you have a real chance of them becoming unemployed as well.

Our domestic gets R150 per day. Seeing that she works for like 3 hours per day, she is scoring big time :D

My older sister pays her domestic worker way more than that, because she deserves it,she is a wonderful lady that does a superb job.

After 9 years of staying in other countries(6 in China, 2 in NZ and 1 in Germany), I got so use to not having one its kinda funny when people talk about em.

You will be surprised how quick you get accustomed to not having one.

Wow, I usually pay them well over double that amount. That is a very low minimum wage though
