Festive season wish list – gaming monitors

I'm looking for one like the Phillips. Just wish it was slightly cheaper.

There are AOC versions as well, but you usually find them in stores instead of online retailers. Samsung also has a few AMVA panels and also makes a PLS one as well, though neither have support for Displayport.

These are the terms I didn't understand in your post:

AOC
AMVA
PLS
Displayport

:D

Okay, AOC is the brand; will they be cheaper?

AMVA has to do with contrast; better blacks...

Displayport is it necessary? My gfx card has VGA; think it has a displayport too...

Somewhat. You know those Proline monitors that everyone looks at because of the price, then backs away slowly because they look really cheap? AOC's kind of like that, but they do make some good monitors if you're willing to annoy the salesman to pull one out the box for you :P

And many AMVA panels are a bit quicker in terms of pixel response (grey to grey) and better for gaming than IPS. The next time I upgrade it'll be to two AMVA panels, I don't need the colour accuracy of IPS in my work.

Nah, DVI or D-Sub is all that most people really need. Unless you have the cash to invest in a G-Sync setup, because that only works on Displayport for now. I personally don't use HDMI either because I overclock my monitors and not all HDMI cables allow for that.

Thanks that's really helpful. I was looking for retailers for AOC but I can't find anything listed on their site. Can only find the distributor tarsus.

Yep, it'll be much smaller shops that stock them, and the expensive units will have to be ordered. I wish Viewsonic was bigger in SA, they also make some nice monitors.
